A crash involving 2 vehicles on a busy crossroads junction in Ryde has forced Police to close the main road through the town this evening (Wednesday).
The incident involving a white Range Rover Evoque and a Skoda Kodiaq has occurred at the junction of West Street and Green Street, with front end damage being sustained to both cars.
Police were called to the smash at around 20:30.
No serious injuries have been sustained but the Skoda’s airbags have been deployed as a result of the impact.
An ambulance has been called to check over the occupants of the Skoda.
The Range Rover has now been driven away from the scene having sustained fairly minor damage to a headlight and the bonnet.
Green Street has been closed by Police in both directions from West Street to High Street, with motorists – especially large vehicles – being diverted via the Esplanade.
UPDATE – The road has now re-opened.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have checked over 1 individual for minor injuries.

20’s plenty. I’m getting sick of these crashes, was on the bike earlier and cars revving in anger because they are momentarily slowed down whilst I’m pulling away only to arrive at a red light down the road to which I proceed to stop in front. I looked at the geezer and hes angry like what the hell is that huh someone is going to get killed again soon and you lot who’s not calm and collective behind the wheel should be ashamed of yourselves. Not that you care anyway
Problem with this junction is the lights are both orange at almost the exact same time. I see it daily people run the amber into red and by that time it’s pretty much green, and anyone quick off the line is on a collision course.
Road safety is poor on the Island
Sadly a very large number of drivers ignore traffic lights, road closed signs, give way and right of way rules such as going into the oncoming traffic lane to go past parked cars, it seems the rules do not apply to them due to their stupidity or arrogance.
Very true.
No one seems to understand roundabouts, also
NO Right turn signs (Brading is proof of that)
If only the Police waited in West Street all day
They would catch hundreds of vehicles turning into the
NO Right turn street off of Brading High Street
They would make thousands of pounds on a daily basis and they
Would therefore not need more of our council tax money
Indeed so, I know its frustrating the whole process of waiting and even coming up to a yellow turning red, there is a inner frustration there not denying that but I want to spread far and wide the thought of a kid or elderly persons to pop in our minds when driving or I run them over then they no the pain lol
White Range Rover ? Is this Same one that parks on pavement in Ryde and outside Ryde Acc blocking exit on to Pellhurst Rd most days and puts kids in danger trying to cross.
I think I’ve seen it parked in Great Preston road.
A Yellow Vauxhall Corsa permanently parks on the pavement
O/s the Council Houses along Great Preston Rd
NO LAW AND ORDER
Ban Pavement Parking is required Islandwide
I always get the impression that most 4×4 drivers are totally exempt from the Highway Code and are free to park or drive however they want.
Absolutely. These cars are far too big for the islands roads. In the main built for show offs, big family’s exempt. Just look at the size of that 4×4 it blocks the road.
Yep. The Boris Johnsons of the Road: the rules don’t apply to them.
Hopefully so karma
Looks like the one that runs the lights on a daily basis at the bottom of st johns hill ryde. See them most mornings when walking the dog. Like the red lights is just an advisory to them. No idea if they caused this but if they did not, they learned why not to run the lights.
Just drove past the old council houses along Great Preston Road
on way home from work.
The usual t wat parked on the pavement outside No. 90
causing mayhem for motorists unable to pass freely.
Does the owner of this yellow Vauxhall Corsa have no respect for other
Motorists!
I think the important detail is that Counterstrike 2 just got announced
Why not start car up reverse it back then road will be open? The good old not my job
Crossroads & Traffic Lights ……come on, own up who jumped them? One of you must have.
That junction is made worse by having almost no pause between one set of lights going red and the signals changing to green on the other. People can push their luck and easily get caught out there.
Traffic light timings are fixed by legislation. They cannot be changed.
It’s 2 seconds from red to green and 3 seconds from green to red. The opposing light does not go amber until the one currently at red has gone green.
Accidents like this are caused when people go through an already red light that has been red for at least 2 seconds.Just bad driving.
The light can be adjusted to whatever Siemens/Island roads/Council want them to be. But to be honest I think it’s been mentioned to them on more than one occasion. Remember the ambulance that was crashed into? And there has been numerous other dings there. You just need to adjust your driving habits and do not move for a couple of seconds after the lights have changed.
The traffic lights need more delay on them people jump them all the time as they do at fishbourn coming from ferry
As many have said here, the lights are the problem. I know the area and know this to be true. These lights need to be fixed else there will be more of these accidents
Oh who cares if the majority of motorists weren’t so narcissistic and arrogant thinking they are the only one entitled to use the roads and that the rules don’t apply to them these things wouldn’t happen they get what they deserve and bikes as in cyclists SHOULDNT BE ON THE ROADS YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING ON THEM YOU PAY NO ROAD TAX INSURANCE OR MOT SO IF YOU DONT LIKE CARS REVING BEHIND YOU GET A CAR OR GET OFF THE ROADS SAME GOES FOR BLOODY HORSES THIS AINT THE WILD WEST OR THE DARK AGES
Jok, you appear to need a few things:
Sadly this not an Island only problem, I commute daily through Portsmouth , from the island, on a motorcycle and at least twice every SINGLE day I have near misses at key points. Mostly by lorries who are so important they have right of way over the law and mr van man who cannot be bothered to take his eyes off his phone.
I have even seen this happen when the police are in a queue, and generally they take off after, and stop, the idiots who then appear surprised!
Maybe its time to stop and scrap offeneders vehicles!
