UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a garage fire in Yaverland this afternoon (Thursday).
3 appliances from Ryde and Shankln are on scene at Yaverland Close, where a garage has caught alight. They were alerted at just gone 12:30.
4 breathing apparatus wearers are tackling the fire using 2 hose reels.
Black smoke has been billowing into the sky, but the fire is quickly being brought under control now.
UPDATE @ 13:42 – Graham Orchard, duty officer for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has praised the actions of neighbours who acted quickly with a hose pipe in an effort to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining bungalow.
Despite those efforts, it has been confirmed that the garage has been destroyed. The bungalow has not been damaged though. The cause of the fire remains unclear but investigations are underway.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are checking over a female occupant as a precautionary measure.
Crews are expected to leave the scene shortly. In the meantime, an East Cowes retained crew are providing cover at Ryde Fire Station.
