A road traffic collision involving an articulated lorry on The Downs has resulted in the road being closed by Police in both directions this morning (Thursday).
The incident has occurred to the east of the Hare and Hounds near Downend.
Emergency services are responding to the incident, which occurred just before 10:20.
UPDATE @ 10:40 – A Co-Operative delivery lorry has crashed up an embankment, coming to a stop side-on across both lanes of the carriageway. The lorry remains upright, however.
The driver of the vehicle has managed to exit the cab and appears to be uninjured.
The road is likely to be closed for sometime whilst recovery agents devise a plan to safely remove the lorry from its current position.
Police have closed the road between Downend and the junction with Brading Down Road. Motorists should divert via Havenstreet or Arreton.
UPDATE @ 14:30 – The road has reopened.

To many places where the tarmac ends and there’s dirt if you go into it your trapped .This is a genuine accident should be crash rails or gravel not mud
Hundreds of thousands drive on that road every year and they don’t crash, too many people like you make up excuses for bad driving..
so do you drive a lorry then its as wide as are roads, There’s a lot of people that cant stay on there side of the road in there little car and also cant flic there indicator on .This is a genuine accident
Me me, you are correct about the tar mac width. Island roads ONLY have to do a certain width, so, on that particular stretch, the tar mac is around a foot too narrow in places, and a dirt rut is awating an error in steering to drag the negligent into the hedge or worse into oncoming traffic.
Island roads should be made to cover the FULL width of all carriage ways. The extra material is nothing compared to someone dying and all the disruption of a less serious incident.
The Co operative good with food.
I personally don’t think a lorry of that size should not be using that route.
That’s a double negative
That’s a small trailer for an artic and far more manoeuvrable than a rigid. I’m guessing you’d rather see empty shelves and fuel stations? If people want the products they need to accept that they will be delivered by lorries.
don’t be stupid are council allows them to build loads of supermarkets on this island wot do you expect
most towns on this island have been ruined by supermarkets and most villages have been ruined by the rich
Heaven forbid any of you lot have an accident and get slated on here!!!!
It’s not a suitable road for large articulated HGVs. I mean, I assume it was a sat nav error that saw them on that road ,or, where were they going? Should go east via Ryde or Arreton. Coming off the downs at Bullys Hill Brading in such a large vehicle is a catastrophe waiting to happen.
