UPDATE @ 19:05 – Cowes RNLI have confirmed that the medical emergency was as a result of a yachtsman, 1 of 6 people aboard the yacht, suffering back and shoulder injuries.

The call to launch was received just as the lifeboat crew had boarded their Atlantic 85 craft for an exercise.

After being given initial treatment by lifeboat members, the casualty was transferred on a stretcher to the lifeboat and taken to Fishbourne, where an ambulance was waiting to convey him to St Mary’s Hospital.

As former firemen were crewing the yacht and a MOD Police launch had arrived on scene to help lower the sails, there was no shortage of other First Aid expertise on the scene.

The lifeboat returned to station at 16:20.
