An Isle of Wight Councillor is inviting bids from local charities and voluntary organisations for grants of up to £300 each from a fund of £3,000 set aside to make such donations.
Cllr Chris Whitehouse, who represents the ward of Newport West on the Isle of Wight Council, today said:
“I have always given away the allowances I receive for serving as an Isle of Wight Councillor and at present I have a fund of £3,000 built up. Rather than donate this to large charities that I have supported in the past, I thought that this time I would invite smaller organisations to make bids of up to £300 each. That way at least 10 local organisations can benefit.”
The councillor is asking voluntary organisations wanting to apply for the funding to write to him at County Hall, Newport, PO30 1UD, explaining:
• What the organization is and does
• Whether it is a charity or voluntary organization
• Whether it operates a Gift Aid scheme
• For how much it is bidding and how that figure has been calculated
• What it needs the grant for
• How many people would benefit were the grant to be given
• How the project would benefit the residents of Newport West or the town of Newport as a whole
• Why other sources of funding are unavailable
• And how, in due course, it can be demonstrated that the funds were used for the purpose requested
The closing date for applications is Friday 21st August.
Cllr Whitehouse continued:
“I’m keeping a very open mind about which voluntary organisations might apply and might be successful. All bids will be considered on their merits, but preference will be given to organisations that would use the funds to provide services to residents of my own ward of Newport West or the town of Newport as a whole.
“Successful applicants are unlikely to be those who bid for funds for an individual or very small group of individuals. I’d really like to see the funds used to encourage community services that benefit quite a few local people.”
