Students at Greenmount Primary School are turning the page on a new chapter after celebrating the opening of their brand-new library – made possible thanks to a £6,000 investment and the tireless efforts of the school’s PTA.
Local children’s author Peter J Murray was the guest of honour for the grand unveiling. Year Six pupils gathered to welcome the popular writer, take part in a lively discussion about the joys of reading, and hear Peter’s own journey to becoming an author.
The new library has been thoughtfully designed to inspire young readers, with a cosy breakout area, colourful seating and easy-to-reach bookshelves — all aimed at helping children discover books that ignite their imagination.
Speaking about the visit, Peter J Murray said:
“It was a privilege to open the library for Greenmount School. We share a passion for inspiring children to pick up a book and use their imagination in reading for pleasure. The pupils and staff gave us a great welcome, as ever, and we look forward to working with them around their lovely new space.”
A smaller library area has also been created to support Reception through to Year Two pupils, encouraging them to develop early reading skills and build a lifelong love of books from their very first days in school.
The new facilities were funded through the fundraising efforts of the school’s Parent Teacher Association, with additional donations from the local community.
Rebecca Day, Executive Headteacher at Greenmount Primary School, added:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to unveil our new library — it’s more than just a space for books; it’s a hub of curiosity, imagination and calm. Our children deserve a vibrant environment that encourages them to lose themselves in stories, and thanks to the amazing work of our PTA, we’ve made that a reality. Today’s celebration with Peter has made it even more special.”
Greenmount Primary now plans to host a series of author visits and reading-themed activities throughout the year, using the new library as a springboard for creative learning and storytelling across all year groups.
