A main road through Newport town centre has been closed by Police this lunchtime (Saturday) as a result of a woman and a child being hit by a campervan.
The incident has occurred on Pyle Street, to the rear of B&M, where a vehicle – a VW Transporter – has collided with a young pedestrian.
It’s understand a woman – thought to be the girl’s mum – has also been injured.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has 2 ambulance crews and an enhanced care paramedic on scene, with Police present in strong numbers – both local and mainland units.
The one-way road has been closed from the junction with St James’ Square with all traffic been diverted locally.
UPDATE @ 13:32 – Police have confirmed that they were called at 12:23 to reports of a collision on Pyle Street involving a van and 2 pedestrians.
The injured pedestrians have both been taken to hospital for treatment.

I sincerely hope the child is OK…. possibly not crossing the road with due diligence or attention if old enough to know how to cross. Maybe stepped off the path without understanding the consequences if a very young child….hope he or she will be ok. Thinking of its parents and the driver.
Wild, uninformed speculation is definitely helpful…
i can assure you it was totally the drivers fault,
They did not step into the road the campervan reversed into them after going down a one way street . They were not a fault !!!!!
Now it’s about time we stop vehicles driving through Newport
Shut up idiot
A Congestion charge will make sure of that.
Kev and his stupid comments again
Hopefully not too serious and wish them both a speedy recovery. Why police in strong numbers, it’s not a riot and meanwhile 100s of vehicles for Takeover event are being allowed to break speed limits, have non road legal exhausts and intimadating other normal road potentially more accidents soon.
Got to use up as much tax payers money as possible.
Totland was a racetrack on Saturday afternoon.
Yeah… not surprised, Newport is quite notorious by now. Looots of trafic. It’s best to avoid walking there if you can. Prefer to shop and dine elsewhere.
But hey, I’m sure all those ideas from Island Echo comments to put more free parking spaces to induce even more car traffic will surely help to revive the city centre 😉
Roads are for vehicles. If you don’t want to get run over, don’t cross the road in front of a vehicle.
Yeah, I’m literally saying there are too many of those “roads for vehicles” and too little safe space for vulnerable road users for me to enjoy some chill time. Much more prefer Cowes.
Get your facts right before you make comments that are wrong . They didn’t walk In front of any vehicle. It reversed into them !!!! After going the wrong way up a one way street !!!
I am not surprised at all I drive through town daily and see people crossing the road when light are green stepping out in front of cars
the injured parties did not step out in front of the car
This is a good indicator zone should be pedestrianised if it happens often, or big crosswalks with pedestrian-priority added, traffic moved around the town (not through it) mostly because…
…why even mix lots of cars with lots of pedestrians in the first place? That’s the main error.
Rip poor souls.Hope the Driver ok.
it was the drivers fault, and yes hope their injuries are not serious
There not dead !! The driver was a fault reversing down a one way street .
What a shame hope everyone ok , was the driver old Kev did make a point about old drivers
Mainland police units for a 1 vehicle RTC? Must have taken a while for them to get over here!
Just wandering if there has been an update how people are that got hurt today. Hope they are OK
The vehicle reversed into them, he had drove past so the women and child stepped out to cross. Pyle street is one way so what he done was reckless. You would only look one way crossing, why the van reversed I don’t know . He was not a elderly driver
You are allowed to reverse in a one way street to parallel park, also one of the ambulances will be driving wrong way out of street. Camper vans like other van’s, lorries have less visibility to rear. Sounds like just an unfortunate accident. All ways look both ways, one way or not as plenty idiot cyclists and scooter riders going wrong way. Making out the driver was a wreckless maniac braking all driving laws is unfair, I’m sure they are very upset too about what’s happened.
Bloody idiot driver’s not bothering to learn the new hierarchy of road rules cars are now supposed to stop before turning into a road if pedestrians are waiting to cross the road the car is turning into stupid and idiotic as it is but that is the law now seems more pedestrians know it than motorists do and are taking it for granted the obnoxious arrogant driver’s here on the island will stop and this is the result due to the arrogance and utter narcissism of island motorists thinking they own the roads and are the only one that matters it’s about time serious driving offences carried a £100,000 fine 10 years in prison and licence revoked for life that get the arrogant scum off the roads and make them safer for everyone
Calm down Jok your do your self a mischief!! I will never be giving way to pedestrians, cyclists, horses or any other thing that shouldn’t be on the rd, rds are fkr vehicles, keep it that way
You will me if are paths cross
Nope certainly won’t Jim boon unless your driving a car
we seem to be having a lot of road accidents ,as a driver i’m fed up with j walkers ,old people who forget about there lack of speed and take chances at an angle to cross the road .Also people who cross on the red light at crossings .This practice has to stop before there are more deaths
FYI …..In this instance – the vehicle reversed into the pedestrians!!!!
Or… separate large swaths of cars from crowds of people?
Jaywalking was a thing popularised by car industry in US. In didn’t exist with horses, bikes, trams and pedestrians sharing the city. It was only created to put people on tiny sidewalks and assert car dominance.
Traffic lights are only needed because of cars. Massive pedestrian, pedestrian x bike and bike x bike crosswalks don’t need them.
All problems you described are non-issue in city centres with more dedicated space for non-cars.
City centres with lots of people and thorough car traffic just doesn’t mix.
If you visit small villages and towns in Spain, Italy, or even middle-size cities like Valencia, or big ones like Barcelona and then go back to UK then the amount of walkable spaces will shock you, in e negative way. I don’t know why we can’t have walkable city centres like all those other small and big places. Literally everywhere in Europe I see a lot of positive changes, even in places that I’d usually say are terrible in urban design (Paris) but UK is somehow lagging behind. I guess we just aren’t as capable like EU nations?
Well walk off to Europe you irritating irrelevant moron
Unbelievable comments. A Mother and child on foot, a vehicle, large, one way street, work and bollards being done on the salvation army building and yet motors still persist to swing round that corner then doing 30 mph up a road that has pedestrians for the whole day, buses, lorry’s, it’s a very busy road full of chancers.for a Newport central road, were there are pedestrians constantly about, there should be more care taken by the drivers. It’s May and it’s not been good, yes motors should not be allowed, cowes has this system, park n ride, Newport needs to be changed, it stinks of car fumes. It’s not safe anymore..
Speculation, speculation – not doing anyone any good. I just hope all involved are OK including the driver and injured persons. Even walking on the streets in Newport can be dangerous as quite often I have had to do a detour due to users of the infamous mobile phone looking at that instead of straight ahead.
No speculation here – fact is the van reversed down the road and knocked them down!
