2 youngsters out for a spot of fishing have found themselves high and dry on Wootton Creek this afternoon (Sunday), prompting a call out for HM Coastguard.
The unlucky fishermen were first spotted at around 16:20 by local residents who witnessed one of the males attempting to walk to the shore. With the mud proving too deep and the journey too risky, they soon returned to the small dinghy.
The 2 young males have found themselves caught out on a falling tide whilst fishing on the creek – around half way between Fishbourne and Wootton Bridge.
Now, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor have been called out to assist the individuals who face several hours stuck on the riverbed without intervention.
Locals have been throwing food and drink to the duo from a nearby pontoon to keep them hydrated in the direct sun.
UPDATE @ 18:05 – The 2 casualties have been safely rescued by mud rescue technicians and the small tender has been tied alongside a private pontoon.
The males are uninjured and are now making their way home. HM Coastguard is standing down.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

Whilst it has proven to be the wrong decision by these two young men, at least they’re not out robbing. They’ve obviously made a genuine mistake with the tide times but it’s good to see they were trying to innocently enjoy themselves. Glad they are safe.
Glad to see they were sensible enough to wear life jackets too.
Ha ha ha
What a bunch of idiots
Absolutely mud !!!!
Good life lesson there boys .read and understand the tide table .I wondered where the coastguard were going .they shot past my house at a rate of knots.
Idiots! Rather than waste valuable resources leave them to wait for the tide!
What’s the point of an emergency service if they aren’t going to help people who are In an emergency. You can’t expect two people to sit there for hours to wait for the tide they’d probably be to tired to row back I bc of the heat
Are you actually dumb?
R u Stupid i think that should be U r Stupid.
How stupid a remark is that? Can you imagine the criticism the rescuers would have got if they had been left there and no one had been to help them? If they had been your kids would you have wanted them to be left there to the mercy of the next incoming tide, possibly stranded in the dark.
If they had a brain they wouldn’t of been in that situation to start with !!!!!
If you had a brain, you would know that it’s ‘wouldn’t have’, NOT ‘wouldn’t of’.
Pathetic
Stupid comment .at least they were doing something constructive and not hanging about on a street corner .they had life jackets on so obviously not stupid kids. Just got the tide wrong .have you never made a mistake ?
No never made a mistake
Have you ?
What makes you think they would of been hanging around on a street corner lol
Is that what you do in your spare time Mr !!
See, you’ve done it again, Dave. It’s ‘would have’, NOT ‘would of’.
Poor lads, least they were doing something active and not being a nuisance to others. Nice of people to throw food at them. Lets hope some managed to reach them.
Hopefully something would of hit them both in the head and knocked a bit of sense into them
Same mistake AGAIN, Dave. ‘Would have’, NOT ‘would of’.
Lol 🙂
