At least 2 cars and a hedge have been damaged by fire in East Cowes this afternoon (Thursday).
Appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to the scene off York Avenue shortly before 14:25.
Crews from Ryde and Newport rushed to the scene and worked quickly to contain and extinguish the fire, which has caused significant damage to a Peugeot 206 and a Vauxhall Omega.
Both vehicles are parked in a private driveway with a footpath between Princess Close and York Avenue running adjacent.
A section of hedgerow has been charred. It’s within the hedge that the fire is thought to have started.
Firefighters have now stood down from the incident but Police remain at the scene having been alerted to the situation at 14:44.
UPDATE – Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that it is investigating the cause of the fire.
A spokesperson has said:
“We were called at 2:44pm on Thursday 14 July by our colleagues from the fire service who were dealing with a number of small fires along a footpath linking Princess Close and York Avenue in East Cowes.
“No-one was hurt, but damage was caused to three vehicles.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fires.”

Did some idiot throw their fag into the hedge I wonder?
If they had a brain, they would be dangerous!
Feel so sorry for the owners of the damaged cars.
More grubby scumbags will be along soon….
For Christ’s sake where was the East Cowes Fire engines Are they still there in York Avenue? If they are then they are the closest.
