Emergency services are responding to an incident in which a car has come to rest on its roof at Downend this evening (Saturday).
The crash, involving a small red car, occurred shortly before 19:20.
Police are on scene alongside the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, which has a paramedic crew and an operational commander in attendance.
It’s unclear at this stage if any other vehicles have been involved. It’s thought the driver clipped a kerb, sending the vehicle over.
This evening’s incident comes just days after a 2-car collision on the same junction.
UPDATE – The vehicle has now been recovered, allowing the road to fully reopen.
The female driver has been tended to by paramedics.
UPDATE SUNDAY – Police have confirmed that just 1 vehicle was involved in the incident – a red Peugeot.
The driver is said to have suffered minor injuries.

Wonder if it was speeding?
Speeding? Seriously? Look at the car, that is not a speedy vehicle! It’s a city/town runabout. Those things do not move quickly and are usually out of puff at about 60!
What a stupid comment.Even a one litre car will eventually reach 90 mph.
Idiot.
And then some. Even the basic normally aspirated 1.0 Micra can hit 100 mph and the turbocharged 1.0 version can hit 120 mph and do 0-60mph in under 10 seconds.
On the Island, on that road? I don’t think so!
How come so many cars end up.on their roof on the Island… its Like there’s a BFG sticking his foot out in the road causing cars to flip catching them unaware….
The best reason yet.
If you look at other local news sites there are a lot of accidents of this sort. It’s not just the Island.
I think on cause is, ironically, the safety features built into modern cars. First off they are much more powerful. A small family car will typically have a 100bhp+ engine, which is the sort of power you’d see in a performance model in the 80s.
Then there are features like anti-lock brakes and traction control. These are very effective at compensating for bad driving, up to a point. The problem is they can only compensate up to a point. When a driver exceeds the ability of ALB/TC the speeds and cornering forces are much higher than with older cars without these features.
Its true, cars are faster now, but the idiots in them are just as stupid, plus there are the added problems of staggering self entitlement in everything and the phone always glued to one hand..
You are missing the point. Modern cars are not only faster, they have hugely better handling characteristics than 30 or 40 years ago. Young drivers in the 80s were just as reckless, but they’d come off the road at much lower speeds.
It is very rare I see handheld phones in use, possibly because most cars built in the last 10 years have hands-free built in. If I see anyone driving with a phone in their hands it is an older driver. Possibly because they can’t figure out how to pair their phone.
My guess would be that a phone is involved in many of these single vehicle incidents. One can never be sure without evidence but that is the thing that is different from the past
More bad driving on the IW
It’s now the most dangerous place in Hampshire this island I wonder if people don’t care or no traffic police ?
We are not in Hampshire
And your point is ok in the south of England then dic-
Why are we Hampshire Wight then
Yes we are.
Stopped being part of Hampshire in1890
.But services like police, fire and health services come under Hampshire.
yes we are Hampshire!
Actually Portsmouth wins that accolade, but it is amazing just how many crashes there are on the Island.
Oh come on … just clipping the curb does not send a vehicle onto its roof..
Clipping a kerb can put a car on it’s roof. We weren’t hurt but one night driving through Godshill the car behind us did just that and shunted our car in the process. It happened so fast and it was very scarey to witness. We were all driving responsibly.
How can you be driving responsibly AND hit a kerb?
“How can you be driving responsibly AND hit a kerb?”
You can’t, I am betting they were on the phone. Don’t have to be speeding, but not paying attention will do it everytime.
Only if your speeding and Godshill is a 20mph zone
Actually it can do. There are videos on YouTube of cars rolling at 15mph
Cars are lightweight now. Steering to light.
It’s speed and only speed I’m afraid it has to b
Yes it will.
Have you ever considered why we have curbs.
To give a small level of protection to the pedestrians using them.
Yes it does, many videos showing just that. Go google. Don’t need to be going fast either.
How so you seriously put a car on its roof on that stretch of road? I’ll tell you how…….driving way too fast! The amount of drivers zooming around the island is a joke, and it needs sorted before they kill someone!
Arrogant pushy ignorant in all facets in their lives so why would their driving be an exception?
They are the only important thing on the planet so nothing else matters in their selfish minds
Totally agree
I thought I was living on the lovely peaceful Isle of Wight…. but now it is more li9ke a mixture of Brands Hatch and Silverstone.. Seems no limits to the amount of noise vehicle exhaust can make… shame about the air quality, with all that unburnt fuel pouring out as the cars and motorbikes backfire… Kids try to remember, too rich a mixture, backfires through exhaust… too lean and backfires through carb(s)… both of which a bad.
The boats run every hour to Portsmouth your free to leve
You wont a carb on a car under 20 years old mate
Even that is too hard to understand so the kiddies just buy a chip and bung it in.
Makes their 999cc shopping trolley pop and bang just like on their X-box.
Young chavs these days don’t know what rich and lean means, let alone what a carburettor is.
14.7 to 1 is the ideal air fuel mixture.
This doesn’t sound like a zoomer to me. More like a boomer.
lightweight chassis. Making cars that think the drivers are driving a suv.but no. Lightweight steering. Light alloys on each corner. That’s what I think.
You’d be wrong.
A Mk3 Ford Cortina weighed just over 1 Tonne, which is a quarter Tonne less than a modern fiesta.
A tiny little Skoda Citigo is 929Kg. Compare that to the original mini at 580kg.
This is all due to crash protection.
More idiots will be along soon…
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !!! Another brilliant driver !!
Its the norm, it happens every day on that island
Another female driver puzzled by her standard of driving lol.
Must have been speeding iv clipped curbs before as I imagine everyone has at some point but iv never rolled or flipped my car on its roof too many morons on the road government have made the drivers test too easy so the morons and the arrogant tossers don’t get filtered out by the test hence the abundance of idiots morons and arrogant tossers with drivers licences who think they are the only ones with a right to be on the road no sympathy for these idiots .
No surprise probably drug or drink driving
I am not excusing the drivers who roll cars but many Island roads are too narrow, and even a road that is slightly narrower than usual forces drivers to hug the kerbs to avoid clipping oncoming drivers, and cars are much wider than when the roads were built.
Also many roads have unnecessary kinks, tight bends and curves leading to a greater risk of clipping curbs.
The council need to address these issues, at worst they cause roll overs , at best they ruin many wheel rims.
Still no excuse for rolling cars at speed, But can the council and Island Roads look seriously at this.
Don’t get me started on MINI ROUNDABOUTS !!!!
My mate Mark, says she can’t park there
It’s down to steering and for those that got there licence out of a corn flakes packet its all due to using that round hoop infront of you but it would help if the dopey council would cut banks and verges back and save all the James Bond antics of wanting to drive on two wheels
Is this the national pastime on the island? Drink driving slarlem and hedgerow demolition. If it was in the olympics the Island would have drivers winning gold all the time.
