A car has crashed into the front of a double decker bus in the heart of Newport town centre this morning (Wednesday).
Police and paramedics are on scene at the junction of High Street and St James’ Street, with the occupants of the Southern Vectis bus and the car – a red VW Beetle – being checked over for any injuries.
The incident happened shortly before 07:30.
Front end damage has been caused to the Route 1 bus, which is thought to have been travelling from Cowes to Newport Bus Station up St James’ Street and across into the bus lane at the time of the collision.
The Beetle – parked just down the High Street – has sustained damage to a rear quarter panel.
It’s unclear at this stage what exactly led to the collision occurring on the traffic light junction.
Traffic is heavy in the area but all roads remain open – save for the bus lane.

If damage has been sustained to the Beetle’s rear quarter panel, I imagine the bus has struck this, rather than the car striking the bus. So, either the traffic lights aren’t correctly sequenced, or the driver of the car jumped the lights! Whoever is at fault, I hope they are okay.
