A 23-year-old window fitter found in possession of a lock knife has been ordered to carry out 220 hours of unpaid work.
McCauley Silverthorne, of Trafalgar Road in Newport, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place and possession of cannabis – 2 offences he pleaded guilty to at the first opportunity.
The court heard that on 4th June this year, 2 Police Constables were patrolling the harbour area of Newport when they spotted a group of 3 people. They were detained for a drugs search and a joint was presented by Silverthorne, who then went on to admit ownership of a man bag.
Inside the aforementioned man bag, more cannabis was found, alongside scales, a wallet and a combat-style lock knife.
James Cameron, defending, explained that his client had already self-referred to Inclusion for his £110-a-week cannabis habit. In regards to the knife, Silverthorne felt it was inappropriate to leave the knife at home where 2 younger siblings were present so took it with him in his bag, but with no intention to use it in any way.
Magistrates ordered McCauley to complete 220 hours unpaid work as part of an 18-month community order, as well as paying £85 costs with a £95 surcharge. There was no separate penalty for possession of Class B drugs.

Will do 40 hours max..most of that stood round with fellow chavs smoking
I thought if you was carrying on a knife it would be a 5 year jail sentence
Let’s face it, this Island is full of scum like this. Where have they all come from? How come there are so many of them here? Can’t get away from the stink of weed no matter where you go. These vile types of people stay up all night, making noise, and hell for the rest of us, and sleep most of the day. No one disturbs their sleep, and they are probably too drugged up to even notice if there was anything to disturb them.
