Southern Vectis is asking local people to get in touch if their essential journeys have been affected by on-board social distancing measures.
The local bus operator has been providing travel for key workers throughout the coronavirus crisis, but has recently increased its services across the Isle of Wight for others needing to make essential journeys.
Richard Tyldsley, General Manager at Southern Vectis, says:
“We have greatly increased our offering across the island, since the government’s decision to begin easing lockdown, and we are seeing higher numbers travelling with us.
“Our customers will notice the social distancing measures we have introduced. These inevitably reduce our capacity, which means less people can use each bus.
“Southern Vectis drivers have a special ticketing counter, which tells them how many people are on-board at any one time – and this is fed back to our website, so people can see how busy each bus is.
“When a bus is at its new capacity level, we can’t accept any more passengers and the destination blind will show ‘bus full’. We are doing all we can to minimise any resulting disruption by running duplicate buses or increasing services still further where we can.
“In tandem with our ticketing counter, which tells us how busy a journey is at any given time, we are asking our customers to contact us if they themselves have had difficulty making a specific essential journey, due to the bus being full.
“Anyone who has experienced difficulties with essential travel can contact us via the form on our website which captures all the details we require. We are constantly monitoring our services, and this information will play a key role in helping us improve our offering still further over the coming weeks. We doing our very best to minimise any disruption to our loyal customers”.

According to WHO, the flimsy masks available to the public are only of limited use, mainly for those infected (who should not be traveling anyway) and those caring for the infected. Indeed, some studies say that the virus can live on masks, and so remain dangerous. I realise that Southern Vectis are forced to follow the make ti up as they go along government strategy, but I for one have given up using busses. To much hassle. Walking everywhere local is actually improving my health and general wellbeing.
So good chance if buses are full people will be late for work
I have seen so many people on buses not wearing their masks including drivers as they come through Sandown town . Why is nobody enforcing this on buses? If anyone is thinking of taking the bus I would say don’t until Southern Vectis start to enforce people wearing masks!
Drivers don’t need a mask
Ask yourself, why doesn’t the driver need a mask? Why doesn’t red funnel staff and Wight link need a mask? Another test for us all under this social experiment. How far can we push the sheep to except anything we say, even without law,no? Look at social distancing then, not law but you all obey. Laughable.
I have seen so many with no face masks on the buses where are the £100 fines?? I’m shielding and watch the buses from my front room when I can eventually go out I wont be getting on a bus!
I will tell you why no 100£ fines. Because just like in America, it has now been proven that face masks are bad for your health, they restrict air, health guidelines show any fig 19.5ppm and below cause health issues, wearing a mask,17.4. So the government is making people do something that is bad for their health, oops. So mask wearers, hows the headaches? Just the start of health issues, dont believe me,research.
