UPDATED: The roof of a Southern Vectis bus was ripped off following a collision with a tree during the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
Emergency services were called to Ashey Road near the junction with Smallbrook Roundabout at around 00:30 after a double decker bus clipped a tree.
It is understood the vehicle was travelling from the Jack up the 80s event and was carrying passengers at the time of the incident. Amazingly, no one was seriously injured in the collision but the driver is said to have been left shaken.
The road remain closed for sometime to allow for recovery of the vehicle and the clearing up of debris but it has since re-opened.
The bus has been escorted back to the firm’s Nelson Road depot in Newport.
UPDATE @ 10:58 – Simon Moye, Assistant Operations Manager at Southern Vectis has said:
“I can confirm one of our buses was involved in an incident at around 12.10am today, when the driver was unable to avoid hitting a tree whilst heading towards Ryde. There were four passengers on-board at the time and some reported minor injuries, but no ambulance was required.
“The safety of our drivers and passengers is our highest priority, and we are carrying out an urgent investigation to establish the circumstances behind the incident.
“The bus roof was badly damaged, and it has been taken away for repair”.
