Emergency repairs to a burst 6-inch water main in Brading High Street are causing travel delays for motorists in the East Wight this morning (Tuesday).
Water has been trickling down the road from the junction with Quay Lane for several days, but it was last night that the decision was taken to break ground and repair the burst.
The main focus of the repairs is on the corner outside Rectory Mansion, adjacent to the junction with Quay Lane.
The busy Ryde to Sandown road was closed at 18:30 with engineers working throughout the night to dig down, locate the pipe and make good the repairs.
However, the road remains closed this morning as the finishing touches are made.
The closure means that motorists are being diverted via St Helens and Bembridge in both directions. An alternative route is Brading Downs and Ashey.
UPDATE @ 12:42 – Island Roads have confirmed that the road has now re-opened with all signage and barriers being taken away.
So water has been trickling for several days!
Thank you Southern Water. Impose a hosepipe ban on households, but choose to ignore your own OBVIOUS leak!!

No it was not, Brading is a hole that is just there to drive through. Having a diversion is a blessing.

We live on an island surrounded by water as is the mainland, floods in winter but water companies don’t seem to store this excess water or desalinate the water that surrounds us.
With past hose pipe bans you would have thought they would have got their act together, shame on them.
Do you realise the cost and impracticabllity of desalinising sea water? Obviously not otherwise you wouldn’t post such a comment.
Yet we’re fined for watering our gardens with a hose!!

If ALL water companies put their money together and construct a more cost effective way of making sea water safe to use (which is in abundance due to the melting ice caps) then we wouldn’t be in this situation. Yes it’s at huge cost but it would of paid for itself if they’d of started this years ago!!
