According to a recent travel article published on hotelnewsresource.com, the top destinations for British holidaymakers this summer include Cornwall, Devon, the Isle of Wight, Whitby, and Blackpool.
The report indicates that 63% of Britons have booked a summer holiday this year, marking a 50% increase from the previous summer. Of these holidaymakers, 72% have chosen to explore the beauty of Great Britain, extending their holidays from an average of three to five days. Notably, Britons are also spending nearly double the amount of money on their British summer holidays compared to the previous year, with an average expenditure of £1011.30, as opposed to £513.13 in 2022.
Furthermore, 24% of Britons are breaking up their traditional two-week holiday into multiple breaks throughout the year, with two staycations planned for the summer months. Collectively, Britons are expected to spend £20 billion on domestic holidays.
The report also highlighted that 25% of Britons consider a summer holiday as one of the few things they refuse to cut back on. Additionally, 41% of Britons are taking advantage of Britain’s holiday hotspots by creating bespoke two-centre holiday packages. By staying at two different locations within a single holiday, they can enjoy diverse experiences, such as a coastal or seaside holiday combined with a rural escape or a city break.
The popularity of coastal destinations stands out, with 43% of Britons choosing UK coastal locations for their summer holidays. Cornwall, boasting over 250 miles of coastline and 300 beaches, tops the chart as the leading staycation destination in 2023. Devon, with its 120 beaches and the captivating Jurassic Coast, secures second place. The Isle of Wight, a paradise island with a UNESCO Biosphere designation and 57 miles of coastline, takes the third spot.
The allure of the British countryside is also evident, with 25% of Britons opting for a rural break. The Lake District, renowned for its picturesque lakes, mountains, and charming villages, claims the top position among rural destinations. North Wales, featuring Snowdonia National Park and captivating scenery, ranks second, while the Scottish Highlands, famous for its mountains and the mythical Urquhart Castle, completes the top three rural destinations.
Moreover, 20% of Britons are opting for UK city breaks, with London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff emerging as the favoured city holiday destinations.
