BLACKGANG CRASH DRIVER AIRLIFTED TO MAINLAND FOR SURGERY

The driver of a car that has been left in an unrecognisable state following a serious crash at Blackgang last night (Tuesday) has been flown to Southampton General Hospital for surgery.

As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to the single vehicle incident between Chale and Niton shortly before 20:50.

Firefighters from several stations worked alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service to extricate the male from the wreckage of his car – a white Ford Focus ST.

A second occupant was also treated at the scene and later conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.

Due to the serious nature of his injuries, the local driver from Whitwell was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital at around 03:45 this morning.

He is currently undergoing surgery.

Hampshire Constabulary have conducted a full crash investigation overnight in a bid to piece together the events that led to the huge impact, which has completely destroyed the front of the vehicle.
