Bembridge Harbour will host the annual Bembridge Gig Fest this weekend, bringing together traditional fixed-seat rowing crews from across the region for the Isle of Wight’s only festival of its kind.
Organised by Bembridge Harbour Authority and Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club, with support from Brading Haven Yacht Club, the event celebrates traditional rowing boats including Gigs and Galleys.
Fixed-seat coastal rowing has seen a strong resurgence in popularity over the past decade. The discipline – rooted in maritime history from Roman transport to river Watermen – remains an important part of local coastal culture, especially for communities living by the sea.
The idea for Bembridge Gig Fest began in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its debut until a trial event in 2021. The first official festival was held in 2022, and it has grown steadily since then.
This year’s event will welcome crews and boats from:
- Eastney Cruising Association
- Langstone Pilot Gig Club
- Affinity Rowing Club (Newhaven)
- Brading Haven Gig Rowers
- Tudor Sailing Club (Portsmouth)
- Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club
Racing will begin on Saturday, from 12:30 to 15:30, with a series of 2km straight-line races between Seagrove Bay and St Helens Beach. Spectators can enjoy the action from Priory Bay or at the finish line near St Helens Church.
A social event will take place on Saturday evening with live music from The Lazerhearts from 18:30. Food and drink will be available from the Duver Café, a BBQ and Steve’s Bar. The evening is open to both crews and the public.
On Sunday, racing begins at 13:00 with a 2km time-trial course around St Helens Fort. Boats will launch in 2-minute intervals, and the winner will be the fastest crew to complete the circuit. The best views will be from Silver Sands Beach.
Keith Cambell, Chairman of Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club, has said:
“The weekend promises to be a real celebration of Gig Rowing showing just how popular this sport is becoming and
proving what a fabulous location the Isle of Wight is for traditional coastal rowing.”
