A striking new artwork made entirely from beach plastic has gone on display in Bembridge High Street, celebrating the village’s recent recognition as the first on the Isle of Wight to be awarded ‘Plastic Free Community Status’.
The colourful installation, which depicts the shape of the Isle of Wight, was created by local artist Holly Maslen in collaboration with refill shop Sea-room CIC. It is made from hundreds of pieces of plastic litter collected from nearby beaches, including bottle tops, plastic cutlery and straws.
The piece highlights the ongoing issue of plastic pollution on the Isle of Wight’s coastline, while also marking the community’s progress in tackling single-use plastics.
Fiona, director of Sea-room CIC, has said:
“Holly and I worked together on this piece to visually illustrate the problem single-use plastic poses in our marine environment.
“We wanted to celebrate the huge achievement the award represents for the village and encourage more communities and businesses on the island to get involved.”
The artwork is now proudly displayed in the village centre, offering both a powerful message and a creative celebration of Bembridge’s environmental efforts.
