Yarmouth RNLI and The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team swung into action last night (Sunday) following reports of a paraglider having crashed into the sea in the West Wight.
Emergency services were alerted to the possible person in the water close to Totland at just gone 20:30, but it wasn’t long before fears were alleviated.
Once on scene the emergency crews quickly discovered that a bunch of balloons had been mistaken by a member of the public for a paraglider.
Yarmouth Lifeboat launched their Y-Boat to get in close to retrieve the balloons from the water. It’s unclear where the balloons originated from.
Both the volunteer RNLI crew and HM Coastguard stood down and returned to station following the false alarm with good intent call out.
