The Loo-vre is on the move…with the popular exhibition of beautifully painted toilets now on show at Department in Ryde.
After a month at Quay Arts in Newport, the 5 toilets created by Island artists have been ‘in-stall-ed’ in Ryde’s cool new arts space, situated in the heart of the Isle of Wight’s biggest town.
Department in Cross Street is a multi-art form cultural space in the former Elizabeth Pack department store.
This Summer, in a nod to all things lavatorial, it is hosting the National Poo Museum as well as One Wight Health’s Loo-vre exhibits – five toilets given an artistic twist to highlight the importance of bowel cancer awareness… and getting yourself tested.
The Your Loo Could Save You campaign has seen the toilets initially placed at 5 Island beauty spots, from Ventnor Park to Brading Down, before they headed to Quay Arts for a three-week exhibition in the Claydon Gallery, where hundreds of people viewed them. Now they have been installed in a ‘Toilet Trail’ through Department, with message boards explaining the thinking of the five artists who designed them.
The 5 artists are: Maddy Dobson, Nathan Holt, Gemma Mallinson, Holly Maslen and Josh Raffell.
Fiona Seymour, One Wight Health Your Loo Could Save You project co-ordinator, said:
“We have been out and about at various events such as Chale Show through the summer but Department and Quay Arts have offered us the chance to show off these creative masterpieces in gallery situations.”
Joe Plumb, from Department, said:
“Here at Department we are all about celebrating local artists. The Loo-vre exhibits fit so well with our National Poo Museum residency this summer, and that is what we really liked about it.”
The National Poo Museum has its own space at Department until 23rd August with Poo Safari guided tours taking place until 21st August. The Loo-vre exhibition will be open throughout August. Department is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:30.
