Fears are growing that a serial arsonist is targeting the West Wight as firefighters from Freshwater were mobilised to yet more straw bales alight overnight – the second night in a row that they have responded to such a call out.
At around midnight, retained firefighters from Freshwater were mobilised by fire control to reports of a fire in open at Compton Farm car park.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that yet more straw bales had been purposely set alight – just a mile from where another set of bales were destroyed yesterday (Sunday).
The bales have been placed at the entrances to National Trust car parks to stop motorists from driving to exercise.
Given the current coronavirus situation, firefighters, the firefighters’ families and the wider community have been put at risk through this thoughtless act.
Hampshire Constabulary attended the scene and are thought to be investigating the arson attacks.

Small battery or solar operated cameras can be bought for tens of pounds now.
Surely several could be hidden on most Island roads to check on traffic and car numbers, especially easy now we have less cars around.
It would also trace a lot of drug dealers, boy and girl racers too.
This seems to be a protest at car parks being unusable, something which is an over the top action, but not as over the top as arson.
Firefighters need to save their resources as Summer will see the bored, sub normal social housing children torching anything they can.
It’s just that they are going on unchecked and have been for years Harry, not that they are sub-normal as you put it. – They just need correction .
Maybe the same ones who constantly ride their very noisy motorbikes (bored out exhausts) round and round Freshwater, lockdown or no lockdown. Annoying residents and terrifying my dog…
There is no policing here, except for the occasional drive through.
-Its The Wild West Wight !
(What can we do?)
Stephen, all you can do is film such, as evidence, then get any normal neighbours to do likewise, and phone, email, write to our MP, the Council, the Police.
Although all are not really ‘bothered’ as these people ensure they live miles away from the trash they inflict by spreading out the low life amongst all (but themselves) eventually enough pressure may get one to do more than a ‘token letter’.
Someone I know had the same issue in Ryde, and he, being large, went around to the culprits house, threatened him and never had any more agro. But he was huge, unafraid, and risky, as the low life now will want revenge if they know where you live.
So former is best and likely only hope. Good luck
We need to have an estate where all those who are caught doing anything anti social such as this, or loud music, or smoking dope, or growing such, or having hoards of vile clones vandalising are all placed together NOT spread out.
Then as they like to live in noise, in squalor, in druggy aggro environments, then they ‘may’ be happier, and WE certainly would be.
Easier for the police too as only one estate to visit, easier as no need to plant trees, or have anything decent as such trash it too.
Then any children by miracle growing up decent, could have something to aspire too in escaping such. As it is now, the lower trash get given the best houses on new built estates, so their is no need for filth to up their game, as life for them IS good now.
Harry Wad, totally true , the people in authority make sure they live away from the trash themselves..
In fact I blame the fools who have the authority as much as the trash, they are the ones who have made these trash even more vile over the years, by dumming down everything to make it easier for them in case their idiocy makes them feel somehow less important or valid,
and the idea that spreading them out amongst everyone else will teach them to be more decent people is wrong. it doesn’t work that way, the people in authority don’t seem to have the sense to know that certain types of people are never going to get on, and trying to make people accept these vile types, just mean everyone is miserable, the trash only like their own kind, and the decent people have to constantly suffer at the hands of the trash in one way or another.
It’s a social experiment that went wrong a long time ago, and is still going wrong because they are still trying to make it work and forcing it on people who want to live free from the threat of these trash all around them.
Being poor does not mean being trash, but the people in authority who move people around like pawns in a game of chess, seem to think that being poor is the reason why most of the trash are the way they are, but that is only their foolish way of looking at it,
it’s like saying a vicious tiger is only vicious because it never had enough love as a tiny cub and give it love and it won’t be vicious any more. It is vicious because it is it’s nature to be vicious, the same with trash, they are that way because that is what they are and no amount of trying to inflict them on people not like them is going to change that.
You ask what can we do? Nothing unfortunately, society is broken or gone, We now have community’s, Your memory’s will sometimes reflect back to the twenty’s when your in your twilight years and wonder, what the hell happened to society…
Those noisy toerags seem to congregate near the bottom of the avenue, a few doors up from the care home. Can be half a dozen milling around outside.
Harry, please stop referring to people who live in social housing in a derogatory manner – you are being very offensive. Thankyou
Appears to be a disgruntled dog walker or hiker to me, rather than a serial arsonist. As hardly coincidence such occurred at blocked off car parks.
A nasty thing to do, as unfair on fire service, tax payers, and likely damaged the roads too.
Sounds like a yob with nothing better to do I’m sure dog walkers wouldn’t be out that time of the night sounds like you don’t like dogs and hikers
Could also be disgruntled water sport enthusiasts.
Perhaps as our ‘farmer friend’ on here suggested, straw is not the best medium for blocking car parks etc.
Very medieval, cheap, but easily destroyed.
A lockable barrier would be of more use, and safer too, as if the emergency services need access to the car parks and beach for rescue work, easier for them too.
Easy to be wise after the event I know, but ONCE bitten…
What a total prat! When they find this little toad they should place him in the middle of a hay barrel set it on fire and roll him down a hill but place it live on television so we have got some comedy to watch then if he survives we should throw stones at him! Who’s in??
And preferably then roll off the edge of a cliff
Ooh that’s a little presumptuous and sexist.
Why a ‘him’?
Woman have mastered fire for decades now. There’s no reason at all not to assume this little sparker is a guy. Might not be a man or a lady. There’s loads of letters in the alphabet now.
Just get rid of them!!!! Jesus! If people wanna exercise at the beach let them! It causes less hassle then send the emergency crews out!
That’s not the answer they have been destroyed by a complete moron with no thought of others when they catch them and they will put them to work in the fields picking fruit and veg
– that’s a great idea for Community Service, at the moment Linda.
Firstly my apologies Stephen for making you look like a retard on here !! ….. at what point do you see fit that it is acceptable to assume that firstly farmers and fruit growers don’t need trained workers !!! Not some little 2 bob mug that has robbed the co-op for a 2 litre bottle of cider so as he can sit in a park abusing the decent public and making his mark on society?? …. also as I have previously mentioned , people who are self employed are looking to work and I would say ( correct me if I’m wrong ) might have a slightly better skill set and work ethic ?? … also Stephen there are still plenty of railings that need paint ring in the island and lots of council waste that needs clearing !! So let’s put our sensible thinking caps on here and realistically look at who should do which job ??? ….again apologies but maybe think before speaking !! Just an opinion of course
Regards Henry
Linda , I must say that I would happily pick fruit or veg now as firstly our harvests on the island are being ruined as of the lack of able to work workers and secondly because I find. I self in somewhat of a predicament!!! Out of work !!! Though I am clearly not a one piece tracksuit wearing moron and neither an arsonist I would be grateful of the income and the exercise!!! .
So I’m intrigued as to how you would find that a fitting punishment when there are people looking for work ?? Do you look down on fruit or veg pickers ?? Do you eat fruit and veg ? Do you think it is normally picked by criminals or by hard working folk with families !! Next time you sit at your ivory table enjoying a Sunday lunch with 9 veg and hopefully cauliflower cheese ( that’s my favourite ) I hope you ponder upon the post I am relying to and maybe think twice before voicing an opinion!! Though it’s is clearly just mine .. regards … Henry
I don’t get it. As the photo shows there’s still big lumps of hay left, so the arsonist didn’t succeed (but did it again anyway). They just peed off the emergency services and police. Doughnut will probably be caught.
Catch this scum in the act and put him away for a long stretch. So the car parks are closed, they are closed for s reason, get over it you prat.
Open the car park and then this will stop this happening such stupidity from our council and national trust. If people want to exercise away from others they aren’t harming anyone. Just get on with your lives like everyone else is.
I must say that as a concerned member of the community I find the actions of others somewhat “baffling” at times …..who ever set alight to these nails should be burnt at the stake !!!! I know that’s a bit ‘medieval’ but as frank the plank says so are the barriers made of straw !! We have all seen Robin Hood prince of thieves or watched Vikings on Netflix no ?? If you haven’t it’s a great series !! and I totally agree with him ( not ) that during this lockdown whilst most of us are safe at home , someone should risk their life and family , spend a few days and thousands of pounds to erect a steel padlocked gate with secure concrete posts bedded in !!!! Really frank ??? Clearly your opinion is valid in normal practice but the world and the island isn’t normal right now so people must improvise and over come !!! Why don’t you offer your services ?? Clearly you are furloughed ???and have a strong opinion !!!! ..I totally understand if the fire brigade were called to this situation it is a total farce and those responsible should be punished !!! Maybe not quite so medievally as first mentioned !!! Maybe just a small castration would suffice ??? ….. either way people have far to many opinions on seals and on hay bails for my liking !!! Just saying ….. so much time to do nothing better in lockdown #getsomeperspective
Henry
Who’s idea was it to place straw bales there?
Query natural causes due to the recent rain.
Just the ones that block car parks?
Concrete blocks are the answer you cant burn them !!
It dosnt matter who did it,a he ,a she, a dog walker, adult or youth or even where they live. It dosnt matter if anybody disagrees with the bales being there or if straw is the appropriate barrier. None of it matters. The person / people are a disgrace and should be caught and punished. The end. Xx
