Police have established a crime scene on a residential road in Ryde this morning (Saturday) following an incident which has led to 1 person being arrested and another being treated by paramedics.
Emergency services were called to Well Street, near the junction with Prince Street, at around 09:30 with multiple police units rushing to the scene, alongside an ambulance and enhanced care paramedic.
Island Echo understands 2 people have been involved in the incident – an altercation – with 1 sustaining injuries.
1 person has been arrested and is being taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
As investigations get underway, a cordon has been erected around an area of pavement and a jacket that has been discarded at the side of the road.
UPDATE @ 11:40 – It has been confirmed that Police were called at 09:10 this morning to reports of a man making threats towards pedestrians and drivers.
A 72-year-old man was assaulted suffering lacerations to his head. He has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.
A 34-year-old man from Ryde has detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
An investigation is ongoing.
Although there is no wider risk to the community as a result of this incident, officers will be out and about in the area today to provide reassurance.
