UPDATED: ARREST MADE AFTER SANDOWN ASSAULT LEAVES MAN WITH FACIAL INJURIES

A 20-year-old man has been arrested after a large police response descended on to Sandown Esplanade this afternoon (Thursday), following reports of an assault elsewhere in the town.

Officers were called at 11:36 to an address in Station Avenue after a man in his 30s reportedly suffered facial injuries in an assault. Teams were then seen to be searching an area around Sandown Railway Station and its underpass connecting with Perowne Way.

At just after midday, a response of 8 police vehicles, including an unmarked ARV unit raced to an area of the Esplanade, where a man was searched and subsequently arrested in connection with an offence.

The man remains in custody at Newport police station as investigations continue.

UPDATED @ 14:37 – Island Echo can reveal that following the arrest of a man in connection with an assault, officers also made a further arrest of a 32-year-old woman on suspicion of burglary following an incident on 21st March in Station Avenue.

There is a crowd of 12 or more drinkers in the shelter by the premiere inn drinking and shouting in one end of the shelter then they go to the other end to urinate in broad daylight when people and children are walking about and playing on the beach. Why aren’t the police dealing with it, the esplanade is a no drinking zone. Then when they’ve finished they go across the road into the premiere inn, bet the rooms look choice. Something needs to be done about them especially once visitors start coming back the the Island.

Yes I agree, but they are not locals,they are the rif RAF from Newport and Ryde coming to sandown for a holiday,us locals tend to police ourselves down at the shelter, and if there is hassle going on it is a few of us telling them to f off back to there own town,as they give us a bad name, x

Great work. – This is how the Police protect us, so thank you to them.
It’s very reassuring to see perpetrators being apprehended, let’s hope that the justices impose sufficient penalties, as reoffending is currently at an all time high..
