Drama was witnessed on the streets of Newport tonight (Friday) as Armed Police swooped on an elderly male, making an arrest in connection with an incident in Wootton.
It was at around 16:45 this afternoon that Police first responded to Wootton, with Island Echo readers sighting multiple units in the High Street area.
In light of reports received, additional specialist resources were called in from the mainland – thought to have been rushed across the Solent by Police launch.
Then, at just before 18:00, a convoy of vehicles moved in on Station Road with the road subsequently closed in both directions, as first reported by Island Echo. The situation was described as a ‘serious’ firearms incident, with residents told to stay away.
No fewer than 7 officers – fully clad in protective armour and with guns at the ready – soon relocated to Newport, taking up position in Pyle Street to the rear of the Police Station. The Police drone was launched.
As the dusk arrived Police identified their suspect walking along the pavement on Fairlee Road, opposite the entrance to Seaclose Park.
In one swift action, Armed Response Officers surrounded the elderly male and placed him cuffs.
He has been arrested for currently unknown offences and has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station for questioning.
