A 44-year-old man has been arrested by Armed Police in Sandown this afternoon (Thursday) after reports he was carrying a gun around the town.
A local Armed Response Vehicle and a dog unit responded to the Avenue Road area of the seaside town at around 14:00 after reports weee received of a man carrying a firearm.
Officers – clad with helmets and with guns at the ready in their hands – were initially sighted near The Caulkheads Pub before making their way towards High Street.
It’s near the library that a suspect was detained and arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear, alarm or distress.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that no firearm has been recovered.
The 44-year-old remains in custody at this time.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that following further enquiries, no further action has been taken against the man.

I think it’s terrible.
The man was seen walking up to cars driving through town pointing something at them

I had no idea we had the raciest murderess in our police force. We must count our blessings, or something.

I was there just after he was nicked, the dog handler should have let the dog go play,
same bloke that chases young girls around town, all parents should beware. I had to take a couple of school girls into my shop the other week terrified after one of his out bursts.
The island makes a good case for bringing back the looney bins.
After reading the discussions on this site, I’m pretty sure the island is a looney bin.
Said The Weasel
No action against the man what is this Island coming to! Should be locked up and the key thrown away.
At least a public order offence, unfortunately it will take him, and his victim to become victim to our soft policing, then they will refer themselves to the police commission, they will have a victim of crime and a victim of themselves who the police allowed to escalate.
It says “No FURTHER Action”.
Just because he was released doesn’t mean the cops haven’t taken ANY action against him.
He will likely be listed as being responsible for some sort of offence but, if no one was willing to give a statement in writing against him and the cops didn’t actually see him doing it, there’s not much they can show a court so they can ‘lock him up’.
Meanwhile today 24th March there was a unwelcome male hanging around Carisbrooke/ Gunville schools..
