Is it worth spending money on cinema trips when you can now watch or download movies from home any day, any time? That is the question now being asked as cinemas close their doors up and down the country.
Many cinemas have been struggling during the Coronavirus pandemic and the industry had hoped the release of the Bond movie ‘ No Time To Die’ would save the day. However, last Friday the movie’s release was further delayed until 2nd April 2021.
Cineworld is closing all of its cinemas in the UK this week due to the impact of coronavirus. This is going to cause a major impact on all of its employees as well as contractors such as cleaning and security. Cineworld have said that around 5,500 jobs will be affected.
Meanwhile, in Ryde, the Commodore Cinema remains open – but how long for? The Star Street complex originally opened in August 1936 and has been operating as an independent cinema ever since. The screens reopened to the public with a number of new COVID-19 safety measures in place back in July but unlike Cineworld, operators Leo Leisure have not yet announced any closures this winter.
An increasing number of people now prefer watching films from home rather than going to the cinema. This may be the way forward enabling people to abide the social distancing rules, unless Boris announces further restrictions.
Over the past couple of years, Netflix has been affecting the movie-going experience, with the Netflix Originals category producing unique shows and movies which are gaining amazing reviews from both critics and audiences. Towards the beginning of lockdown Netflix introduced the Google Chrome extension ‘Netflix Party’, allowing people to sign in and watch movies together, just like a cinema experience but safer.
Cinema tickets are averagely more expensive than the monthly price of Netflix, so is it worth paying to go out when you can watch films and series from home whenever you like?

I’m getting used to this new North Korean lifestyle
Cinema experience still the best way to watch a movie. Beats watching on a tiny screen – very sad! Personally, enjoy a night out at a good restaurant & cinema trip.
Totally agree
I was going at least 3 times a week in the afternoon
We all need a bit of fantasy .
Only stopped due to not being able to wear mask that long .
Never worth re opening. To sit in a building in semi dark with the odd balls we now have in society, and with the fact we have no security, means it can be a dangerous place to be.
Combine that with the fact that it is easier to remain at home, with no parking issues. no expensive food, or paying to see some over paid actor, in some unrealistic, computer generated over dramatic situation, so make believe it is insulting your iq, as the hero survives hell and fury thrown at them, or stupid Disney modern, poor quality computer generated characters, with voices of know actors to try to encourage people to sit and suffer the overly PC tripe that is spoon fed to todays children is no great loss.
An airless building with no natural sunlight or fresh air, with unwashed dubious characters and spilt food, drink, and body secretions is now the ‘last place’ anyone who cares about their health would wish to be, when there is no need.
IF you miss such fun, buy a huge TV, sit as close as you can, get your kids to keeping kicking the back of your chair whilst scrunching a packet of noisy eaten crisps, and have someone with a loud voice with terretts syndrome, sounding off nearby and someone else with a big hat sat in front of you with B.O.
Cinemas are thankfully finished, lets progress now.
Geeez… You definitely need to get out more!
What a miserable little prat you are .
Now that cineworld has shut ,the commodore in Ryde will be busier which might help them all
No.
Well your welcome to close the one in the tin shed anytime. in fact pull the whole thing down.
We have a 65 inch tv bit we still love going to the cinema to see a movie on the bog screen .
Well said!
Wow. It’s like all the best memories I have from my childhood, are now becoming things that My children may never experience. So sad. I wouldn’t want to be a youth today. It was confusing enough the first time around, and that was in the good old days.
Car drive in anyone? Never done but not bad idea is it?watch in own little space.plenty of privacy too “hold hands”too
No,I much prefer the Cinema.
