Amazon World has lost 2 of its new endangered Red Pandas just weeks after they were born.
Female panda Xiao-xing gave birth to twins on the evening of Tuesday 31st May, with it hoped a thriving red panda family could be found here on the Island.
Endangered animals, their primary threats are habitat loss and degradation, human interference and poaching. With it believed that the total population of red pandas has declined by 40% over the past 2 decades so having families in captivity is a real boost to their survival.
Zoo keepers at Amazon World weigh the Red Pandas weekly and had been monitoring her weight gain throughout the pregnancy. Early in May, they prepared for the birth by having cameras installed in all the panda nest boxes so they could keep tabs on them.
Xiao gave birth at 22:04 and 23:11 on the evening of the 31st May with the labour was watched by senior keepers via the cameras. Both cubs and Xiao appeared bright and strong after birth and keepers were pleased that both the cubs were seen in the correct position for suckling.
Sadly 1 of the cubs passed away in the early hours of Thursday 2nd June at just 2 days old. The cub, a little girl weighed in below the 100g expected birth weight of a baby pandas.
She spent all her time in her nest box looking after her other cub, the cub was seen regularly suckling and appeared to be developing well, growing in size, becoming more vocal and moving around the nest box more and more each day. Senior keepers continued to check the nest box cameras through the night to check all appeared well
However on the evening of the 12th June, Xiao became very distressed and after monitoring her on the cameras it was apparent that sadly the second cub, also a little girl had passed away at 13 days old.

As sad as it is, I think zoos are coming to an end. Apart from the work to keep species that we made endangered, they really don’t have a place in a modern world.
How come i tick the thums up in agreement,yet it displays 7minus as though i’m proffering the exact opposite view ? can’t understand this conundrum,unless there’s a youtube style arrangement with this platform? zoos should have gone out with the ark imho.
