German supermarket chain Aldi has been left red faced following a signage faux pas at its Cowes store.
A recent refurb has seen the introduction of self-service checkouts. Ahead of them becoming operational, new signage has been installed to indicate to shoppers the alternative way of checking out.
However, somewhere along the line instructions have been lost in translation because the signage is all in another language – Welsh!
The working theory is that those responsible for the printing and installation of the in-store signage have become confused as to Aldi Cowes’ location, mistaking it for being near Newport in South Wales not the Isle of Wight.
The incorrect signage reads ‘Hunan Checkouts Arian parod a cherdyn’, which translates as self checkouts, cash and card.
It’s understood new signage has been ordered…

Won’t be using them whatever language they are in.
Oh I agree. Nowhere near classy enough for me and they only sell the cheap caviar…. sometimes. Not even a decent bottle of champers. Oh no. Far too cheap!
I think JohnR was referring to self-service checkouts! Jumping to conclusions.
I refuse to use self checkouts. They mean less jobs. The next time anyone uses one, ask to use the staff toilets or for staff discount and see what answer you get
As much as I admire your motives the sad reality is its got to the stage many shops cant afford more staff. So its either people use self service tills or they have to shut the doors for everybody. So in a roundabout sort of way they are actually keeping the few people that still work there in a job. This is pretty much what happened to Newport Co-Op
Obviously no staff are needed on self service tills so a few staff could be laid off. This is what companies like Aldi’s want. Like JohnR I won’t be using any self service tills in Aldi’s. In fact I don’t use them in any stores wife and myself visit. As for shutting the doors for everybody if the self service stores are not used – it won’t ever happen.
Why have supermarkets anyway? Doesn’t that make you feel like a lamb for slaughter, boxed in, being fattened ready for butchering, all the shelves always fully stacked the irony is we are what eat and there caged 7 months of the year. Sheep isnt too bad depending on the farmer but beef wow for a year and a half give or take, of its 2 and half year life on the farm is slain and out into shelves that probably has more than one cow in a rump steak. Self checkout is a good thing but they still always have 2 or 3 staff around to handle baskets and machine malfunctions. Dont fear the future just because your uncertain of its content, that’s the beauty of life
Does not surprise me. Get so many online UK sites saying they don’t deliver to the island because it’s a channel island and they would have to pay for customs duty. I’m being serious, people running companies in the UK (I spoke to a few on the phone to try to resolve the issue) think the IOW is a channel isle and not part of the UK mainland. I guess by their measure Portsmouth is a channel isle too….
Not sure what sort of companies you are dealing with, I have numerous deliveries a week and only ever had one refused and a couple had to pay slightly more for delivery . We have a Portsmouth post code.
Whoever actually put the signs up must have been pretty thick, or blind.
Most are thick from Wales and they do things to sheep too
An the old gems get trotted out again. Anyway, if the alternative is an English girl then we say baaaa… 😉
Caulkhead, say no more.
Would pay to see a blind person putting that sign up. Could you get a midget to help?
One could always refer our Isle of Wight Dictionary (it does exist) for our own translation, though its colqual.
The Isle of Wight Dictionary is one page long and the only word in it is incest.
I am a man of puns, I love a good pun.. “aldi get that wrong” HAHAHAHA
It’s ridiculous anyway. The sign may as well be here because no one in south Wales can speak Welsh. They all speak English.
Absolute rubbish!
Yes we do! Here in Cardiff most of my neighbours speak Welsh, my kids went from preschool to uni in Welsh and our eldest daughter is a teacher in a Welsh language school in Newport.
I was told by a Welsh man once than anyone can speak that language.
2 LLs 2FFs and spit all over the person in front of you!
can we have self service at lake please
I feel that if one uses self checkouts, then there should be a discount… as no need to pay any staff…
Other thing that gets me is bags… pay for a bag, then walk around with this bag advertising the shop… but have to pay for that privilege… I will never pay for a bag and display their logo when walking about with my shopping… always take my own unmarked bag with me.
You are one uptight weirdo. You want sponsorship for carrying a branded bag! Do you also scrape the logos off your car and any clothing?
