A 17-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after a 9-year-old boy was assaulted and robbed of his bag in Shanklin over the Bank Holiday Weekend.
The incident occurred shortly before 17:30 on Sunday (7th May) after 2 boys, both aged 9, were approached by a group of youths outside The Falcon pub in Regent Street, Shanklin.
1 of the boys was assaulted – leaving him with a bloodied nose – before having his bag stolen, prompting a member of the public to give chase.
Luckily, the member of the public recovered the stolen bag and returned it to the victim.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“As part of enquiries, a 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in custody at this time.”
UPDATE ON THURSDAY 11TH MAY – The 17-year-old has been released on Police bail whilst enquiries continue.

Completely false, almost all sex offenders are sent to a local jail close to their home address where possible prior to release, none are directly relased on the Island unless locally remanded by the Island courts.

Before the Two Tier Education System came in many of us at 9 years old would have to traval quite long distances across the Island for school so surely 9 year olds should be able to go out and be safe.

Well done the chap that caught the little scum. Good that it’s being delt with. In the 70’s and 80’s you could have all your things stolen off you on the way home and no one would care and it would be your fault for not getting home quicker. Nice to see attitudes are changing to violence against children. But needs to get better. Violent assaults happen daily in schools and are brushed under the carpet as ‘bullying’. Time to call bullying what it is, assault, and get the police involved so the perpetrator learns that they must not do this. Too late trying to teach them after school.
