A Newport man who was caught drug driving in a car he had d borrowed so he could run some errands, has been banned from the roads for 3 years.
Thomas Mason, 29, of Staplers Road in Newport, admitted drug driving (cannabis) and driving without insurance when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (19th August).
Prosecutor, Lauren McConnell, told the court that on the 22nd March at around 20:00, Mason was stopped by a roads policing officer on Sylvan Drive in Newport. The 29-year-old had a passenger in the vehicle.
Having been approached by the officer it was found that the car insured to someone else, not Mason. A roadside drugs wipe was conducted in which a positive result for cannabis was returned.
Following further tests at Newport Police Station, a reading of 3.5mg per litre of blood was returned – above the specified limit of 2.
Mason has a total of 10 convictions on his record and previously convicted of drink driving back in July 2023.
Defending Mason, Oscar Vincent, told the court that this was a routine stop and that there was no suggestion of any bad driving. Mr Vincent also added that Mason was almost certain to lose his job as a delivery driver as a result of his impending driving ban.
Due to his previous relevant conviction, Mason was banned from the roads for 3 years and ordered to pay a fine of £12. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.

High time drink or drug drivers are banged up.
I don’t get it….people use,all kind of excuses when driving under the influence and no licence or insurance etc….if you are not legally driving there are buses, taxis trains or walk ….there is no excuse….
They know in 2025 Britain nothing will happen to
them.
How times have changed, UK law use to be strong and
effective.
Public transport is no use if you were taking a passenger for a consideration…
Thank goodness he has been banned, who wants drugged up delivery drivers anywhere near them?
Is that £12 fine a misprint?
For no insurance, there is a possible fine of £2500. He has / had a job, so I imagine the fine would be higher, he can certainly afford the drugs.
So why was he worried about his job after being caught if he was that bothered surly he wouldn’t of taken a car he wasn’t insured to drive and wouldn’t of taken drugs
If a Company employs such a person, it says a lot
about the Company.
A Company I would not give business too!
There are no excuses.
what delivery company employed him if he was convicted of drink driving in 2023, must be shoddy outfit or desperate
The island is full of shoddy companies, this is
proof in the pudding.
£12 fine? Ludicrous.
Costs more to park your car all day, unless parking
in Sandown.
Lol
There was no mention of a guilty plea and the time lapse between offence and hearing implies hedid not plead at the earliest opportunity if at all, thereby wasting time and adding to cost.
Lame excuses excuses excuses ! Choices & Consequences have you not learned yet ? Obviously no so hey ho making a career of it are you ? Loser.
