41-year-old Jonathan Weaver has been slapped with a 22-month driving ban after he crashed his van into a hedge whilst more than twice the drink-drive limit.
Weaver, of Sandown Road in Bembridge, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this afternoon (Tuesday) facing a single charge of drink driving – a charge he pleaded guilty to at the very first opportunity.
The Crown Prosecution Service detailed to the court how, on 30th December last year, members of the public reported a vehicle that was being driven in an erratic manner before crashing into a hedge near the entrance to Culver Down – not far from Weaver’s home address.
Police arrived on scene to find a white VW Transporter T4 off the road and on its side in a ditch, as first reported by Island Echo.
Those present quickly confirmed that Weaver was the only person in the vehicle, although he denied being the driver. When asked by Police if he had been drinking, he replied ‘a shit load’.
He was breathalysed and subsequently arrested, providing an evidential reading of 89 in custody – the legal limit being 35.
Magistrates heard that Weaver has 8 previous convictions for 17 offences, including a drink driving conviction from 22 years ago.
Representing himself, Jonathan Weaver said that it was ‘disgusting’ to drive like that and that he simply should have not been behind the wheel as he wasn’t of sound mind.
Weaver apologised to the public and to his family for behaving that way.
He explained that his property management business will be massively affected as a result of his conviction.
Magistrates handed the 41-year-old a 22-month driving ban, fined him £346 and ordered him to pay £85 costs with a £138 surcharge.
Scumbag needs to go to prison. No thought for anyone but himself. Only saving grace is didn’t kill someone with his selfish antics
Well said.
I no longer vote, we are run by a load of useless
spineless muppets.
Drink and driving kills innocent people, yet these
Selfish B’stards don’t get locked up.
Speeding on the island is rife, yet nothing gets
done about that either.
Time for devolution, we need a mayor with balls
running the island.
When are we going to bang these selfish B’stards up.
The Government keep banging on about law and order
yet fcuk all gets done.
Any drink or drug driver needs immediate 5 year
imprisonment, they won’t do it again!.
All valid about sentencing not being adequate but but please don’t lower the tone by using swear words veiled in misspelling.
Calm down Mary Whitehouse, how else do you
describe a drink driver!, no place in society for
such people, so many innocent lives have been
lost over the years due to drink driving.
