2 youths have been robbed at knifepoint in broad daylight on Sandown High Street this afternoon (Sunday).
Police were called to the seaside town at 13:11 following reports that 2 people had been threatened with a knife.
Demands were made for them to hand over money.
As previously reported by Island Echo, officers – including specialist teams from the Joint Operations Unit – have been searching the nearby derelict Ocean Hotel. It’s understood 3 people have been detained as a result of the search.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called to reports of a robbery on the High Street in Sandown at 1.11pm today (6 February).
“Officers received reports that two people were threatened with a knife and had money demanded from them.
“We are on the scene and are carrying out enquiries”.
It comes less than a week after a 14-year-old boy was threatened with a knife near Sandown Pier. He was forced to hand over his trainers.
UPDATE MONDAY – 3 people arrested by Police have been released from custody, but remain under investigation.
Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
Disgusting behaviour ( I doubt if they are local ).
Maybe it is time to get organized and set up some patrols and find these scum ?
I doubt that they AREN’T local.
Why do you think they are not local
I DOUBT if they are local because Sandown is a very small place with a very good community and once word gets out of who the perpetrators are, then a bit of street justice may suffice, seeing as the police are so busy.
Young Caulkheads
They should be robbed of their liberty instantly and for a very long time to show that we won’t put up with this kind of rubbish in our community.
All knife crime should carry a massive sentence.
Any youth caught carrying a knife, regardless of age, sex or non previous knife conviction should automatically receive a custodial sentence of at least a year with no parole and their parents should receive some sort of punishment especially if their dear little thing was out in a gang or late at night.
Santown House again.
The laws need to change so that these cretins are wiped out, why do law abiding people have to put up with this behaviour
Drive through Sandown and you will see so many youngsters thesedays in groups roaming the streets.
Bring back walking Bobbies on the beat.
Clear the streets of rubbish
The fact that this incident took place in the middle of the day on the camera protected main shopping street and not in a back street at night shows that those involved don’t consider the police to be a credible deterrent on the island.
I’m worried that, unless something is done very soon to restore public confidence and reverse years of cutbacks, people will take thinks into their own hands and we will see vigilante groups “policing” the streets.
Do the cameras still work? I expect they have been turned off due to “cutbacks”
I have a batman suit let’s go
Chop off their hands.
Time to get the torches and pitch forks out me thinks!
Bring back the Press Gang, although on second thoughts the Navy wouldn’t want them.
Should be shopwatch so businesses can call police asap, instead of 101 waiting all day for no response
Well the fact that Sandown is chaos with road works everywhere makes it easy for people to commit crime and run off knowing the police can’t get to the scene quick enough! Sandown the forgotten sea side town !
Omg what is going on, they should be locked up regardless of age. Nobody should be carrying knives. I do hope the victims are getting help they need.
