Islanders travelling to the mainland over the festive period are being reminded that a full closure of the M27 – between Junctions 9 (Whiteley) and 11 (Fareham) – is set to begin on Christmas Eve (Wednesday), with significant disruption expected through until early January.
The major roadworks will see both carriageways closed for 12 days as part of National Highways’ bridge replacement project, affecting one of the busiest motorway routes for Isle of Wight residents heading to and from the Portsmouth and Southampton areas.
The works will continue through until Sunday 4th January 2026, with diversions in place. The route is used by many travelling to family gatherings, airports, and healthcare appointments over the festive break, meaning delays are likely across the region.
National Highways say that a signed diversion will be in place via the A27 and A32, and have advised all drivers to allow extra time and plan their journeys accordingly.
The upcoming closure is also expected to impact travel to local hospitals and GP practices. NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight has issued advice urging patients to plan ahead for appointments scheduled during the affected period.
Patients with appointments during this period to:
- Allow extra time for their journey
- Check local travel and diversion routes
- Consider alternative transport options
Those unable to attend due to severe disruption are urged to contact their healthcare provider as soon as possible.
