Firefighters are working to extinguish a vehicle fire at Sainsbury’s supermarket in Newport this evening (Monday).
1 appliance is in attendance off Foxes Road, where smoke can be seen billowing from a vehicle that is alight.
Island Echo understands the vehicle is a small van – possibly a Citroen Belingo – located on the ground floor.
It’s unclear at this early stage if the supermarket has been evacuated.
UPDATE @ 17:40 – The fire has been extinguished using a hose reel and 2 breathing apparatus.
No one is thought to have been injured.
Newport’s Blue Watch have now stood down from the incident, heading back to station with a tub of chocolates and some mince pies as a donation from the supermarket management.
Sainsbury’s remains open as normal.
Van owner was pretty brave. Reversed his van out of a parking bay to stop other cars catching fire and get it out from under the car park roof so less dangerous and easier to put out. My car was next to him so thanks for that
True, well done that man. But the truth of the matter is that it is poorly maintained vehicles that are the ones that burst into flames.
Hey Ebenezer, are you going to react this way to every expression of humanity this Christmas? The chap got into his burning vehicle to protect other peoples’ property – and all you can do is sneer and infer was his fault it caught fire? I would send you compliments of the season but actually I think you should get a tent and take yourself off to a field somewhere until Christmas is over, rather than inflicting your misery on the rest of us.
Rubbish .faults can develop any time on any vehicle .i had a fire years ago and it was not lack of maintenance.
