Firefighters in the West Wight are tackling a suspicious fire at the Astro football pitch off Moa Place in Freshwater this evening (Sunday).
The fire, which is suspected to have been started maliciously by youths, has caused damage to the multi use games area (MUGA).
1 retained appliance from Freshwater is currently on scene having been mobilised to the incident at around 19:15.
Firefighters donned in breathing apparatus are utilising hose reel jets to douse the flames and damp down the affected area.
Tonight’s incident comes following a string of anti social behaviour in and around Freshwater in few weeks.
UPDATE Monday – It has been confirmed that a number of chairs – which were stolen out of a nearby garden – were set alight, with the fire spreading to the MUGA goal area and the wooden fencing.
Put them in the stocks.
The problem is people being paid to have children.
Not so long back if you became pregnant you or your partner had to work harder to maintain your standard of living.
NOW you can do less hours (16) and have universal credits or tax credits make your wage up to a higher level than if working full time.
ADD to this the then free or heavily subsidised rent and council tax, and free school meals, uniforms, transport to school, extra funding for heating, insulation, school trips, free gym membership etc
Consider that this money then given is not used to spend in nail bars, pubs, clubs, etc
So now unwanted, unloved children are born, as the parents know a free roof and meal time come with such for doing nothing.

55% increase in the precept, I quote from the recent Parish council meeting, ““Freshwater is a community to be proud of. The investment by the parish council in services which enhance and support the community as a whole must be commended.”
Perhaps they will supply petrol and matches so the mega expensive proposed skatepark can be burned down by the poor yoof who have nuffin to do….

Those youths ! Of freshwater are getting out of hand and won’t be long before something drastic happens ,,,,, come on mr plod sort these youths out ,more patrols and on the beat work wouldn’t go a miss

Bloody hell,little cherubs doing that there’s no deterrent so they don’t care,just a little “no that’s not very good behaviour off you go” and then they can do it again or worse

Tell me again, why the hell in these cash strapped times are we proposing a new skate park for these brats?
I say remove what is there as it is nothing but trouble.
And we will be paying a 55% increase in Freshwater Parish Council precept – in part towards new skate park – for it to be destroyed by those it is intended to benefit.

Come on parent’s do your duty! It’s your job NOT THE POLICE who should be controlling and bringing up YOUR CHILDREN. It has become a real issue in Freshwater with undisciplined youth’s to the point that some people are dealing with your child’s behaviour for you since you clearly don’t want to deal with them yourselves. So don’t you dare whinge when their dealt with by the local community.
Bring back the birch.
I’m pretty sure that local people know exactly who is responsible for this and other incidents in the area.
If there’s CCTV images, they should be published and people given a chance to name the individuals captured on CCTV. This happened with the rugby club in Sandown which received mindless vandalism and the perpetrators were caught on CCTV and subsequently named by the local community after the images were published in the local press. It does rely on there being CCTV however, otherwise there’s people out there who may just name a person for vindictive reasons.
Time for the locals to sort them out! That will bring the police flocking in .
