A man and his yacht have been towed to the safety of Ryde Harbour this afternoon (Wednesday) after getting into difficulty close to Ryde Pier.

Ryde Inshore Rescue were tasked to launch by Solent Coastguard at around 13:05 following reports of a vessel drifting towards the historic Ryde Pier.

Ryde Rescue 1 lifeboat was swiftly launched and Calshot RNLI were also sent to the area, the later standing down a short while later.

A tow was established and the small vessel was taken to a pontoon where Coastguard Officers from Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team were waiting.

It is thought that an employee of Hovertravel was able to board the casualty vessel to assist the lone skipper, indicating how close it got to the shore. It is thought the skipper was trying to sail to the River Medina.

Ryde Rescue have praised the actions of Hovertravel’s staff and thanked them for their assistance.

The incident was brought to a close shortly before 14:00.
