The Wight Dolphins Sub Aqua Club are calling on volunteers from across the Isle of Wight to join them for the first-ever ‘Big Wight Beach Clean’ – an event they hope will become a yearly fixture in the local calendar.
Planned for Saturday 25th October, the community-led clean-up aims to tackle litter on Isle of Wight beaches, raise awareness about environmental issues, and bring together individuals, clubs and organisations with a shared interest in protecting the coastline.
The exact location of the event is set to be confirmed closer to the time, once weather forecasts are clearer. Organisers are aiming for a morning start to coincide with low tide, giving volunteers the best opportunity to clean as much of the beach as possible.
As well as local residents, the Wight Dolphins plan to reach out to local media outlets and Isle of Wight MPs to help promote the event and grow support.
The club is encouraging anyone interested in taking part or supporting the initiative to get in touch. Organisers say the hope is to not only make a visible difference to the local environment, but also to spark a network of future clean-up events across the Island.
