The Isle of Wight Postal Museum opened its doors to the public over the Bank Holiday weekend, with a special preview event held exclusively for members of the Isle of Wight Women’s Institute on Friday (23rd May).
The private opening was arranged by Pauline Rippon from Gurnard WI, who also coordinated a stunning display of almost 100 hand-made post box toppers. Created by women from across the Isle of Wight, the toppers featured intricate knitted and crocheted designs that wowed attendees under the sunny skies.
Among the imaginative creations on display were depictions of an Isle of Wight cyclist, Noah’s Ark, an escaped convict, the Mad Hatter’s tea party, The Beatles, and several tributes to the armed forces and VE Day. The variety and craftsmanship of the toppers left WI members delighted and inspired.
Pauline Rippon herself contributed to a topper representing the Alzheimer Café, featuring the slogan ‘all in the same boat’. She also organised a raffle as part of the event’s activities.
The day was widely hailed as a resounding success, with WI members praising the creativity on show – and many enjoying a well-earned treat from the on-site ice cream van.
The Ryde Post Box Museum, a unique and quirky attraction, remains a popular destination for those keen to explore the history and culture behind one of Britain’s most iconic symbols.
