The miserable weather being experienced across the Isle of Wight is not only set to continue but will get worse as the week progresses, with a yellow weather warning for wind now issued for Wednesday.
Forecasters at IW Met Service say that a strong Atlantic storm system will push in from the West during Wednesday morning bringing severe gales and heavy rain.
Wind gusts of 50mph could develop quite widely throughout the day with gusts of 60mph on exposed coasts and hills, with towns such as Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin likely to see strong gusts.
Very large waves can be expected on Southern and Western coasts leading to hazardous conditions on the beaches and for small watercraft. There is the risk of disruption to public transport including cross-Solent travel.
It has been a somewhat wet and windy start to the Summer holidays for tourists and locals alike, dampening spirits at a time of the year that should see the Island come alive. A number of events have been cancelled over the past 2 weeks and, on Wednesday, Shanklin Carnival is due to take place – but the forecast is looking unfavourable.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says:
“It should be noted that 60mph gusts would be of little consequence during the winter months, but as there are various events taking place along with a larger amount of people on the Island during the summer, the risk of accidents or injuries due to the conditions is significantly higher.
“Any outdoor events should be carefully assessed, especially those in exposed locations, but also events taking place in built up areas as large buildings can cause localised eddies, leading to unexpected gusts that can sometimes be much stronger than the surrounding areas.
“Disruption to outdoor events should be expected, especially where there are temporary structures. Motorists can expect leaves, twigs and plant debris across the road.
“Loose garden furniture should be secured”.
The warning is in force from 11:00 until 20:00 on Wednesday 2nd August 2023.

One person’s misery is another person’s pleasure. Nice and quiet outdoors at the mo.
But the traffic queues! 🙁
Have heard that ome of the West Wight exposed camping sites are having leaflets handed out by the Samaritans to all who arrive now.
Think all should be handed such along with the ferry passes.
Least fewer illegals arriving, but sadly only postponed so expect more stealth taxes and council tax increases but NEVER the real reason given.
Must keep the electorate naive as feasible and pretend everything is done for ‘our’ good, when it clearly isn’t
I think you tin foil hat has blown off in the wind soft lad
I did wonder why I suddenly felt the urge to put 50p in the Oxfam tin, then suddenly remembered that no need, as none left to save, since the mobile phone and net, all here now.
The Oxen go straight to Mc D’s, everyone is happy…….aren’t they?
Were your parents consanguinious?
No, Church of England I think.
No they both ate meat, a good balanced diet, mostly home grown veg too.
I better leave off the baked beans that day.
Is this a consequence of Brexit ?
The rest of Europe is getting lots of hot sunny weather, but we’re just getting continual wind & rain…
Perhaps if we hadn’t voted to leave Europe, we’d be getting the same as them….??
(cue the down voters,..’cos I dared to mention that big con/mistake referred to as Brexit LOL)
(p.s. this is what is referred to as a joke,.. I know most of the usual individuals who post comments on IE have no sense of humour at all, but well… it’s worth a try )
Quite the opposite to global warming I’d say hottest July on record my arse 1976 was the hottest year on record still is it’s gotten cooler every year since 76 I know I was there and been here ever since I don’t haven’t experienced a year anywhere near as hot and dry as 1976 ever again global warming is a government perpetrated con a lie to control the masses and bleed them dry of Thier hard earned money so politician’s can stay rich and get richer and take away our rights the fiction that is religion dosent work for this purpose anymore so climate change is the new religion fiction to control us
“I know I was there and been here ever since I don’t haven’t experienced a year anywhere near as hot and dry as 1976”
It’s amazing how the narrow-minded can only conceive and believe anything if it has directly happened to them.
Lacking the ability to understand that things can happen elsewhere and are not-only limited to their direct experience.
“Well, it never happened where I was, so it can’t have happened anywhere else”.
And if anyone tries to explain to them, that it was different elsewhere, they just resort to claiming the other person is lying, rather that accept that they might, possibly, be wrong.
I concur with you 100%, 1976 was beyond a shadow of doubt the hottest culminating in July, it’s impossible for me to forget it, there was a phenomenon in July 76, an island wide invasion of literally trillions of Ladybirds from the continent, an event that had never happened before or since, I can never forget sweeping up many thousands on a balcony scooping them up into a bucket, they died on mass in the same way that they arrived, an unforgettable experience.
What about last year? 40°+ and no rain for 6 weeks
2 weeks ago we were all going burst into flames in the record heatwave!! Anyone fool enough to believe the Met Office?
I understand it was the BBC who for their reasons kept on putting out continuing wrong forecasts.
Luckily we are not associated or affiliated with the UK Met Office, which is why we didn’t warn of any heat for the island a few weeks back, but also we correctly predicted the last 2 lots of summer gales.
Can’t believe how the weather shitted up for kids holidays, bloody typical after being so hot and fine right up until they broke up!
Mother Earth getting her revenge back with stupid human who has F…. the up the
planet earth over the centuries, a warning.
That be that there climate change ..bollocks
