Representatives from the Royal British Legion and Ryde’s Mayor, Richard May, were joined by members of the public for a poignant gathering at the War Memorial shrine on Lind Street earlier this week (Thursday) to mark Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
The informal ceremony included the laying of a wreath and a minute’s silence in honour of those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War.
Councillor Charles Chapman, in his capacity as President of the Royal British Legion Ryde branch, opened the ceremony with a recital of the exhortation.
Mayor May addressed those in attendance, expressing his heartfelt gratitude for the peace enjoyed today.
Speaking on the day, Mayor May has said:
“I am deeply thankful never to have faced the horrors of war or conscription.
“We owe an immense debt of gratitude to those who stepped forward for their country, and to those who never returned.”
The gathering served as a quiet but meaningful reminder of the courage and resilience shown by past generations, and the importance of remembering their legacy.
I will never forget what these brave men and women
went through so we could have our freedoms.
It disappoints me that the Government took away
the pensioners fuel allowance.
If it were not for many of the pensioners, we would
not be here today.
VE DAY WHEN GOOD TRIUMPHED OVER EVIL
The good old days when people pulled together and
also respected others.
Sadly those days are over, should there ever be
another war it will never be the same.
It’s a pity the world hasn’t learnt the lessons needed. 🙁
How far off is world peace?
I am starting to wonder if the Elites start wars
to de-populate, because after all the wars over
the years, apart from lost lives and destruction
caused, wars solve nothing!
