A car has landed on top of another vehicle after smashing into its side and forcing it to roll over in Wootton this lunchtime (Thursday). Emergency services are currently dealing with the unusual road traffic collision on New Road, near the entrance to Woodside Bay. Island Echo understands that the male driver of the Audi was heading to the shops when he suffered a medical episode at the wheel. Instead of turning, he continued straight on and ploughed into the side of another car. The unoccupied, parked vehicle has subsequently rolled onto its roof with the Audi coming to a stop on top, with the front of the vehicle in the air.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are working alongside fire crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to free the driver, who is said to appear unharmed. The vehicle has been stabilised. 4 police cars, 2 fire engines, a fire officer and an ambulance officer are all in attendance having been alerted to the incident at just before 13:15. UPDATE @ 14:29 – The male driver is now in the care of paramedics and is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further checks. Emergency services are now standing down from the incident and recovery of the vehicles is being arranged.
