University students from the Isle of Wight who test positive for COVID-19 could be influencing case data despite not being on the Island.
Latest case figures show 492 people have now tested positive for coronavirus but not all cases could be on the Island.
At a meeting of the local outbreak engagement board, held for the first time on Thursday, councillors questioned whether students away for their studies would have an effect on the Island’s coronavirus cases data.
Director of public health on the Island, Simon Bryant, said people are tested where they live but those students who have not or are not registered with their nearest GP at university, and test positive for COVID-19, would be counted under the Isle of Wight.
Figures from Public Health England link positive cases to the person’s place of residence — which could still be the Isle of Wight if they have not changed their information.
Cllr Clare Mosdell, cabinet member for adult social care, said:
“We are saying we could have a test result showing as being someone from the Isle of Wight but they could be a student in Nottingham.”
Mr Bryant said it was something being looked at very carefully.
Some areas with university populations have seen mass outbreaks and halls of residents shut down to contain the spread.
Education secretary Gavin Williamson recently confirmed students would be able to come home at Christmas, dispelling worries.

I think they are being very optimistic, as clearly there are cases on the Isle of Wight, as have been reported by the press, in care homes, schools and colleges. Whilst some university students may be among our total number on the Isle of Wight, it is impossible to say with surety where they initially picked up the virus. I cannot see why they are wasting their time trying to lower the figures, rather than focusing on the many problematic issues that surround tracking and tracing this virus.
It is clear, from the national figures, that Covid seems to be significantly rising among the 10 – 19 year old age group, which suggests that the virus is spreading at schools/colleges. As this has grown rapidly since these institutions opened, I think the health officials should be paying close attention to these potential sources of infection that can spread to the community, not wasting their time ‘dollying’ up the figures, to make themselves look good!
Until this mutates and starts taking the young, then many are so selfish they care little that they spread this to others more vulnerable. That is the society we have now created and imported here now.
Its a cold calm down
A cold with a high death rate, yep
Corona virus is a comon cold
It’s not a common cold you dumbass. Do your research…Geez what a stupid, ignorant comment.
Go on google type ama medical encyclopedia and corona virus then click on images its there for every one to see its what doctors learn dumb ass
Another sheep brainwashed by the world leaders lol
This is exactly what I have been saying you don’t need to be a virologist to see the time line this incompetent government just refuse to see logic
PCR tests do not indicate the number of cases of people with symptoms of Covid-19. They only indicate the presence of an RNA sequence present in both live and dead fragments of SARS-Cov-2 among other things In other words, the ‘second wave’ is fallacious.Viruses do not do waves…they are seasonal.
The ‘Ivor Cummins’ channel on a video site does an analysis titled “Ireland and Europe’s Viral Outlook – what does the Latest Data say?”

If they are seasonal which season does covid 19 belong to? It has been present in Spring, summer and Autumn so far?
Cases ..yes..deaths?now not so many .throughout uk
Totall scaremogering again
Most testing posotive wont even get sick.post only deaths and icu numbers.nowt else.n the numbers here and uk are inflated and its all pretty boring now
I completely agree, sir. Tedium and treachery at the top, I’d say. One in two million chance of dieing from this plague and one in three chance of getting Cancer. And yet millions of people who are likely to get, or already have, Cancer cannot be examined, screened, treated, or otherwise because if everyone over seventy-five dies from Covid-19 who will vote for anybody at the next election? The ‘virus’ is a terrible bore. The reaction from governments worldwide is perverse and, thereby, scandalous. The reaction of normally sane people who support fascistic measures out of encouraged fear is, frankly, pitiful. The Ancient Greeks had a saying: ‘Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first send mad….’ My case in point.
The Covid Hystericals are the mad.
testing because of censorship
The Covid Hystericals are the mad.
The younger generation don’t care about distancing rules at all. There were a group of teenagers in the Park yesterday all sitting around, close to each other, then they all stood up hugging each other taking photos on their mobile phones!!!!! And as for the Uni kids, they have to stay isolated for 2 weeks and they think it’s the end of the world for them. Serves themselves right. They thought they were going to university and they could have the Freshers week, a week of drinking, partying, drugs and sex as usual…….Ha!!! Wake up and discover what is going on in the world and yes, it does affect them. Didumms, signs in their windows saying “Help and Get me out of here”…… they’ve all had a shock because they all thought they could do exactly what they wanted despite what is going on around them
I take it that you are old
Well you are obviously one of those wasters ignoring the rules like a twat!
You related to mr justice ?
Absolutely not!
Simple answer. If you’re old, stay away from young people. Once enough of them have caught covid, recovered and gained immunity, there won’t be anyone left with the virus to pass it on to us oldies. Herd immunity the easy way.
Back in the 60s we did not have to go to Uni for drinking, partying and sex ,however I did not ‘ do the drugs scene’. Just saying.!
It is not ‘COULD be’ It is ‘WOULD be
quote “Simon Bryant, said people are tested where they live but those students who have not or are not registered with their nearest GP at university, and test positive for COVID-19, *would* be counted under the Isle of Wight.”
Who really cares !!!!
