A bold and colourful youth-led fashion show celebrating sustainability, creativity and carnival flair is set to take over Appuldurcombe House in Wroxall on Saturday 17th May.
New Carnival’s Trash to Trend will see young designers unveil one-of-a-kind outfits made entirely from recycled and repurposed materials in a spectacular catwalk competition hosted by local celebrity drag queen Quivers.
The event is part of New Carnival’s Isle of Creativity initiative and is funded by Arts Council England. It brings together young creatives aged 14–30 from across the Isle of Wight, including participants from:
- New Carnival’s Isle of Creativity group
- Isle of Wight College (Art & Design and Foundation Learning)
- The Bay CE Secondary School
- The Island Free School
Live DJ sets will soundtrack the afternoon alongside street food from Honey’s Doughnuts and The Big Eat Co. Guests can explore an art exhibition, try on a real ‘Sustenta Carnival’ costume direct from Rio, and shop at the quirky Wardrobe of Weirdness vintage pop-up.
The judging panel features:
- Quivers – drag queen and performer
- Joel Lines – Central St Martins graduate and designer
- Marnie Janaway – fashion, brand and product design expert
Individual entries are still welcome. Young people interested in creating and showcasing an outfit can register via the event’s online form.
Hannah Ray, New Carnival Director, has said:
“New Carnival is fascinated by the crossover between haute couture and carnival costume. Both are handmade, one-off pieces based on themes – the difference often lies in the budget. High fashion can afford luxury, but carnival designers often turn trash into treasure. We’re excited to see what these incredible young people create – the future of fashion!”
New Carnival is also seeking volunteers aged 14-30 for modelling, hair and makeup, and backstage support roles. Those interested should contact Isle of Creativity Co-ordinator Patsie Gorman at: [email protected]
