The derelict site of the former Zanies nightclub in Sandown is once again the subject of a planning application for a row of 5 terraced houses.
Applicants John Moorman and Paul Moorman, of Zanies Ltd, are asking the Isle of Wight Council for permission to build on land at the Esplanade which has sat empty since the former nightclub building was demolished in 2015.
A previous application for the site was approved in December 2017, with a requirement for works to begin within 3 years – but that didn’t happen. The site was then put on the open market for £895,000 in 2020, but it appears it failed to sell.
This latest application is identical to the 2017 application, consisting of 5x 3-bed townhouse properties with parking.
A covenant prevents building much higher than the proposed houses, which will sit on an 832-year leasehold, 0.10-hectare plot between Napoleon’s Landing and the apartment block next door.
Each property would consist of a garage, bathroom, main entrance/porch and bin storage areas at ground floor level, plus 3 bedrooms and bathrooms at 1st floor level, as well as a living and dining room and kitchen/breakfast room with access to a rooftop balcony above.
More plans catered for the DFL’s to come down here and buy up 2nd or 3rd homes. What about people who live and work here and need homes. Middle finger to the islanders yet again. Never mind Ventnor Botanical Gardens will be built on next.

It is a prime site so I wouldn’t expect “affordable” houses to be built there. I’m not one but there are plenty of Islanders that could afford to buy one, especially ones that were born here and moved away to improve their incomes. Lots of Islanders come back once they’ve seen the world.
I wouldn’t expect affordable housing to be built here either, but this is is a site for tourist attractions like amusement arcades, beach shops and food outlets not expensive housing that we both know will almost certainly be 2nd homes or hugely expensive holiday lets.

maybe they should return to a nightclub so people have somewhere to go, there is nothing here for the younger generation to go, no nightlife for islanders or holiday makers, these new property’s will only be affordable to mainlanders. again not for locals when is all this development going to stop, island people have to have priority for housing.
Any house is affordable if people get off there arses and actually do some graft! But sadly these days the majority of people think it’s there right to be looked after and housed, the government make it to easy for spongers to do the bare minimum.

I don’t live in a mansion but I do have a nice house thanks, a house that I worked very hard and saved for and worked my way up to get, I made the right life choices and sorted a place to live before starting a family, I no plenty about the benefit system and know even more about houses and the market thanks mr island resident,

At least these are a sensible height in keeping with the rest of the esplanade, unlike the ridiculous Sandbanks building next door!
Rents are ridiculous and cost of housing is beyond some on the island no matter what they do (the cost of property is reflected in the rents incidentally, it’s not greed primarily but just about return on investment; no-ones going to let out a £300,000 house for £350 a month.. and if they were forced to like some suggest then they’d just sell up to a “second home owner” anyway)
BUT on other side of coin Isle of wighters do seem to be half hearted when it comes to enterprise ie creation of wealth. I could give numerous examples of “businesses” that do just enough to get by, so their employees are hamstrung
I’d be in support of any proposal, would be much better than the current state the land is in, absolute blight on the area.

I have to say that I am totally with the ones who do not want this huge development. Far better for the town to keep the esplanade full of burnt out, clapped out buildings. They alone help to keep the DFL’s away !!
