Rookley Village Association has been forced to cancel this year’s Gardening Galore event completely due to the recent heavy rainfall, with discussions now being held to see if it should be moved to a different time of the year from 2024.
The popular Spring event was initially due to take place on 30th April, but was postponed until 14th May due to the waterlogged conditions at the village’s playing field.
However, further heavy rainfall in recent days means that, with great reluctance, organisers have been forced to cancel this year’s event entirely.
It’s said that the field is so wet that it would be dangerous to go ahead.
Sonya Rigaud Barrett, from the Association’s committee, has said:
“With the current challenges that the nurseries and growers are facing, and the need for funds to cover our own hugely increased running costs, we were really hoping that this event could take place. However, the field is so wet that it is reduced to little more than a marsh in places and it would be irresponsible to go ahead.
“We are in consultation about the possibility of a late summer or autumn event, and whether the timing should be changed for 2024”.
