UPDATED: The Heights Leisure Centre in Sandown has been evacuated this morning (Tuesday) following the discovery of what is thought to be ammunition.

All buildings have been evacuated and the centre has been closed temporarily as a precautionary measure.

The historic items were unearthed by contractors working on site at around 08:00. Building work is taking place to extend the ToneZone facilities available to the visiting public.

Hampshire Constabulary have been alerted to the incident and have sent an Armed Response Vehicle to inspect the discovery.

Land off The Broadway in Sandown, where The Heights has been built, is the former Sandown Barracks and therefore it is not unexpected to find hidden ordnance.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:

”We are investigating and will update customers as soon as possible”.

UPDATE @ 09:08 – Following an hour’s temporary closure, The Heights has been given the all clear and has now re-opened.

UPDATE @ 11:00 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that rusty bullets and drill bits were discovered.

They were removed by Armed Response Officers.
