The Big Social Meet will celebrate its 100th milestone this Sunday (18th May) with a free community dog walk at Parkhurst Forest, starting at 14:00.
The monthly event, organised by Ry’s, has become a popular fixture for dog owners across the Isle of Wight since its launch in October 2015. Despite a brief pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the walk has continued almost every month for nearly 9 years, drawing regular crowds to scenic spots across the Island.
This weekend’s walk will begin at the benches above the main car park at Parkhurst Forest, with organisers reminding attendees that the meeting point is not at Marks’ Corner. The route is expected to last around 45 to 50 minutes and will be split into 2 groups to cater for dogs with different social needs.
Dogs may be walked off-lead at their owner’s discretion, but they must be kept under control at all times. Owners are also reminded to clean up after their pets.
To mark the 100th event, every participant will receive a free goodie pack for both dogs and owners. Special discounts will also be available on Ry’s services, including doggy day-care inductions and health and nutrition workshops. A professional photographer will be on hand to capture the occasion.
The Big Social Meet has previously visited locations including Firestone Copse, Carisbrooke Castle, Mottistone Down, Tennyson Down and Yaverland beach. The event remains free and open to all, including families, local businesses and members of the public – even those without dogs.
Ryan, founder of Ry’s, has said:
“The Big Social Meet has become one of my standout parts of the month and I am so proud to say we have achieved such great attendance for our island’s dogs.
“I often get dog owners messaging me before the event apologising that they cannot attend and they’re disappointed that our diaries clash.”
Looking forward to it, so is the dog.
