A 19-year-old man from Ryde is in a critical condition in Southampton General Hospital after colliding into a parked van on Sunday night.
The incident occurred on Rink Road, Ryde at around 23:20, but the teen remained injured on the floor for around 2 hours before he was discovered and the emergency services were called.
Island Echo understands the male was riding a ‘pit bike’ type motorcycle when he collided into the rear of a parked Ford Transit van.
It wasn’t until around 01:00 that Police were called, by which time the man had spent a significant amount of time on the ground in sub-zero temperatures. Emergency services are thought to have arrived at approximately 01:50.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service says they were alerted at 01:53.
The casualty is understood to have been airlifted to the mainland at around 08:20 yesterday morning (Monday). He remains in a critical but stable condition at Southampton General Hospital.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:
“We are investigating a collision involving a motorbike and a parked Ford Transit Van in Rink Road, Ryde.
“The incident is suspected to have occurred late in the evening of 7 February. Police were called at 1am on 8 February.
“Enquiries remain ongoing”.

Hope the young lad is ok you don’t have much protection from a pit bike if you hit something shame he had to lay for so long
Instead of any negative comments how abouts he’s poor family we were young and silly ones let’s hope he’s OK
I preach by this, thoughts go out to the family and friends
Oh excuse me, I believe we are still in lockdown… so why was he out, on a PIT BIKE, that late at night… and did the parked van jump out at him… ?
I wouldn’t wish a motorbike accident onto anybody but before criticising the ambulance crew I’d be inclined to wonder what essential journey required him to be out on a pit bike after 2300 in literally freezing temperatures with the remnants of snow on the ground. In addition If the nearest available ambulance was in the Sandown area it would have had to travel via Bembridge or Arreton to get there.
I heard him roaring up and down as the bike was ridiculously loud and woke me. I was just grateful the noise had stopped, but am sorry to hear it only stopped because he’d had an accident Hope he makes a full recovery …
Isn’t it about time that the “Comments” are switched off on ALL news items.
Wasted effort, Simon. Very few understood the irony of your remark, sir. I, for one, would rather have comment on the news rather than the interpretation and opinions of the ones telling it..
Agree about switching comments off permanently. I have never seen such a range of de facto racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, deeply prejudiced wilfully misleading and downright idiotic comments across the comments section on nearly all stories. And lets not forget the usual trolls here either. Sadly tho the moderator of this section is much more concerned with clicks for revenue or maybe even agrees with some of these comments, so a switch off is highly unlikely to happen.
plato – as you have just posted an insulting post, you are just as guilty as all those you claim to be referencing. You are no better and at best, a hypocrite.
freeloaders – as you have just posted an insulting post, you are just as guilty etc. etc.
sad part is, bet you thought you were being smart! LOL
do not have to read the comments
Have you thought about hanging your monicker you just spout sh——
Well said,we don’t know the facts
To be riding an illegal bike most see the cretin got what he deserved. Save you tears for his victims trying to get insurance from an uninsured chav
You wanna watch what you say, he is not a chav, he never deserved this how dare you talk about my boyfriend like that
Maybe YOU should have not let him ride… LOCKDOWN STAY HOME What do you not understand..
Think of the guy and his family and have some respect?
Think about the ambulance crew who could have been dealing with a heart attack patient instead of having to go to a muppet who shouldnt have been out on a probably illegal bike at that time of night during a lockdown.
I hope the guy recovers. I hope he learns his lesson and doesnt make the same mistakes again. I hope the van driver can claim for repairs. And I hope whoever called an ambulance and sat with him gets some thanks.
Discussing other aspects of an accident doesnt lack respect for the guy. Not at all. Hopefully in future he will earn respect by following the law.
Why did his family not stop him from even going out.. it is LOCKDOWN… ???
Because he lives on his own and has no family on the island !!!!
Is this the lad that got airlift to Southampton
And no brain.. or care for anyone else… well maybe now he will think twice..
Excuse me, why did he NOT show respect for others… LOCKDOWN STAY HOME…. Can you people not understand this? LOCKDOWN DO NOT GO OUT… Idiots..
oh wow, were the rules we had to stay in at all times? never ever go out? would be grateful for the link for that information, thanks! will wait, dont worry!
A 19 year old lad is critically injured in a horrible crash and most of the comments on here are just plain nasty.Making unfounded accusations and sniping because of their own prejudices
I hope he makes a full and quick recovery
Yes and as the bike was being ridden illegally he could have killed somebody. So get stuffed no sympathy from me.
Is it a fact that he was riding illegally or have you interpreted some of the above comments as the truth?
Main Fact is : LOCKDOWN…
Other facts : Nighttime, freezing cold, ice and snow.. collided with a parked van…
Expensive bit of fun eh ?
He couldn’t of killed someone because he wasn’t driving like a twat, he lost control !!!!
really ?? So when he lost control, as you say, what if someone was walking home , instead of a van parked there, a person..
You may think the person ( if there) would have moved out of the way.. possibly.. BUT if bike rider had lost control, how would a person know which way to go.. especially if it coming at speed.. which quite obvious he was.. hence his own damage..
You are an evil person to wish injury on any one god help you
Spoken like a true idiot.
I agree mate ! Too many out there flouting the rules, think they are better than anyone else… and only teenagers… ha ha ha ha !! he deserved what he got, very lucky it was not worse..
The Lord works in mysterious ways..
Look I feel sorry for anyone who gets injured, BUT this guy should not have been out, 19 years old, obviously still learning how to ride or get used to roads. Freezing cold, ice and snow, possibly illegal bike.. possibly no insurance and it is LOCKDOWN STAY HOME>. so I do not feel sorry for this one. I feel he got his just deserts.. He had NO thought for anyone but himself. The Van was parked.. It was not the Vans fault. Poor judgement by the bike rider and so stupid to be out on it.
L O C K D O W N what do you not understand ???
looking forward to you sharing the link to where it says youre completely forbidden for ever going outside, and the price for not doing so should be serious physical injury and induced coma. thanks, look forward to you providing your source.
