If you’ve been thinking that it was hotter today than the past 48 hours then you’d be right with IW Met Service’s weather station in Lake recording 36.1c, closely followed by 36c in Ryde.
It was slightly cooler in Shanklin – but only just – with 35.8c recorded. Sandown also broke through the 35c barrier, although only just.
Forecasters say the reason for the extreme heat was a sudden change in wind direction to the south/southwest, allowing for extra heating of the air as it flowed down from Shanklin Downs as well as Brading Downs and Culver Downs – affecting places to the north of them. This is why Shanklin and Sandown, along with Bembridge and Ryde, saw the highest temperatures.
